Your guide to the best luxury hotel in Augsburg

Augsburg is the city that is older than Munich and was richer than both Fuggers put together: a Roman foundation, a free imperial city, Europe’s bank in the 16th century – and since 2019 World Heritage for its water system of canals, water towers and the three great fountains of Maximilianstrasse, the widest street any German old town has to offer. Add the Fuggerei, the oldest social housing in the world, with an annual rent of 88 cents.Hotel Maximilian's AugsburgHotel Maximilian's Augsburg · InnenstadtFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Augsburg and chose one: a luxury hotel on precisely this street – with suites named after the palace opposite and a violinist, and champagne at breakfast. What that means for booking is below.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

One luxury hotel in Augsburg – and who it suits

Our choice for Augsburg is the Hotel Maximilian's Augsburg on Maximilianstrasse, between the town hall and the Schaezler Palace. In our ranking it stands at 4.8 out of 5, and a night starts at 229 euros. The hotel takes part in the I Prefer loyalty programme.

Why we recommend it: Because it is one of the oldest hotels in Germany – an inn since the 14th century, from 1495 to 2020 under its old name, with the Rococo façade of 1723 that Johann Baptist Gunetzrhainer gave the street – and because today it is the hotel with the star: the restaurant Sartory holds one Michelin star. Add 132 rooms and suites, a spa, a second restaurant and a champagne breakfast. Our recommended category is called Executive.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

This hotel’s suites are named after the palace opposite and after a violinist – and its breakfast is named champagne.

Eight categories: 30 square metres in the Studio and the Superior room, 40 in the Executive room, 47 in the Schaezler Suite, 80 in a further suite and in Suite 500, 83 in the Paganini Suite. Our travel advisors confirm the size of the eighth, the Executive Suite, before you book.

The names are Augsburg: Schaezler is the Rococo palace diagonally opposite, with the ballroom where Marie-Antoinette danced on her way to Paris; Paganini played in the city in 1829. Anyone wanting a suite with history has two here: the Schaezler at 47 and the Paganini at 83 square metres.

Then the breakfast: it is a champagne breakfast for two. That is rare.

And the combination that matters: 4.8 out of 5 – the second-highest step in our ranking – for 229 euros.

Our advice: Take the Executive room as the middle and the Paganini as the suite. At 40 square metres the recommendation lies between the 30 of the entry point and the suites; the upgrade on arrival can lead from there into the Schaezler at 47. Anyone booking the suite straight away takes the Paganini at 83 square metres. And the table at Sartory you mention to our travel advisors at the same time.

Where to stay in Augsburg: on Maximilianstrasse, between town hall and Schaezler Palace

The Hotel Maximilian's Augsburg stands at Maximilianstrasse 40, in the middle of the old town – four hundred metres from the town hall with its Golden Hall, eight hundred from the Fuggerei, one kilometre from the main station.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone taking Augsburg on foot – town hall, cathedral, Fuggerei and fountains lie within ten minutes – and for anyone wanting to see Munich without sleeping there: a good half hour by train.

What lies within reach: the town hall with Elias Holl’s Golden Hall, five minutes; the Fuggerei, inhabited since 1521, with the museum in one of the flats, ten minutes; and the Schaezler Palace opposite, with its Rococo ballroom and the state gallery with Dürer and Holbein.

For orientation: the main station is fifteen minutes on foot; the train to Munich takes a good half hour, to Munich airport a good hour. The car goes into the underground garage; Maximilianstrasse is for walking.

Eight categories: the best hotel in Augsburg from the inside

The Hotel Maximilian's Augsburg lists eight categories, five of them suites.

The rooms: 30 square metres in the Studio and the Superior, 40 in the Executive – our recommended category.

The suites: 47 in the Schaezler Suite, 80 in a further suite and in Suite 500, 83 in the Paganini Suite; our travel advisors confirm the size of the Executive Suite before you book.

On the view: in front of the hotel lies Maximilianstrasse with the Hercules fountain. If you want a room facing the street, say so when you enquire.

What applies equally to every category: the champagne breakfast for two, the 100 US dollar hotel credit, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability, I Prefer points and status and a welcome gift.

What a night at the luxury hotel in Augsburg costs

A night at the luxury hotel in Augsburg starts at 229 euros.

There is expressly no minimum stay: a single night can be booked. Included are: the champagne breakfast for two, a 100 US dollar hotel credit, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability, regular I Prefer points and status benefits, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability and a welcome gift.

When it is loveliest: in May and June, when the fountains run and the street is a boulevard, and in Advent, when the Christkindlesmarkt stands in front of the town hall and the angels sing from its façade.

What belongs to Augsburg: the Augsburger Puppenkiste, whose child audiences are grandparents by now, and 8 August, the Peace Festival that only this city has as a public holiday. And the extension behind the hotel with seven suites and a rooftop pool that the hotel has announced – ask our travel advisors about its status.

When to ask early: for the Christkindlesmarkt and the Peace Festival, and for the three named suites on any weekend.

How long to stay: two nights for old town, Fuggerei and an evening at Sartory – three if Munich is added.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

A Michelin star, champagne at breakfast and exclusive services in a 5-star hotel

Bavarian Swabia is the part of Bavaria that was once Swabian and has stayed so in its dialect – with Augsburg as its capital, which as a free imperial city never thought of itself as Bavarian. Anyone coming from Munich notices it in the calm; anyone coming from Stuttgart, in the fountains.

Three things belong to it. First the Fuggerei: endowed by Jakob Fugger in 1521, 142 flats, inhabited to this day, for 88 cents a year and three prayers a day. Second the water system: canals, water towers and the three great fountains – Augustus, Mercury, Hercules – which became World Heritage in 2019. Third the Golden Hall: the ballroom of the town hall of 1620, destroyed in the war, regilded from old photographs until 1996.

The package at this hotel is breakfast, credit, upgrade, points and gift.

What our travel advisors arrange most often: the table at Sartory, because a star in Augsburg goes faster than the room, one of the named suites – Schaezler or Paganini – and the day trip to Munich, because one sleeps better in Augsburg.

And for I Prefer members: our benefits sit alongside those of the programme, they do not replace them. Give your membership number when booking and points and status come on top.
