Your guide to the best luxury hotel in Agios Ioannis on Mykonos

Agios Ioannis is the bay in the south-west of Mykonos where “Shirley Valentine” was filmed in 1989 – the chapel by the water, the narrow beach and, opposite, Delos, the sacred island of antiquity on which nobody was allowed to be born or to die. From Mykonos Town it is four kilometres, from the bustle of Psarou a world.De.light Boutique Hotel MykonosDe.light Boutique Hotel Mykonos · MykonosFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Agios Ioannis and chose one: a luxury hotel in which every category is a suite – and five of six face the sea. What that means for booking is below.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

One luxury hotel in Agios Ioannis – and who it suits

Our choice for Agios Ioannis is the De.light Boutique Hotel Mykonos on the slope above the bay. In our ranking it stands at 4.4 out of 5, and a night starts at 208 euros. The hotel belongs to no chain.

Why we recommend it: Because it is an all-suite hotel – a rarity – and because it stands above the bay in which Mykonos still looks as it did before the beach clubs: white, Cycladic, with Delos as the backdrop. Add an infinity pool with pool bar, a restaurant with Greek cooking and sunbeds at Kalon Beach down in the bay; some suites have their own pool or an outdoor whirlpool. It is open from May to October. Our recommended category is called Superior Suite Sea View.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

Six suites, five with sea view – and the largest has an outdoor whirlpool.

The suites: the Suite comes twice, once at 30 to 35 and once at 35 square metres, 42 in the Superior Suite, 45 in the Deluxe Suite, 60 in the Grand Suite – all five with sea view – and 80 in the De.light Suite. Six categories, all suites – an all-suite hotel is rare.

That means: here the sea is the rule, not the level. Anyone wanting the bay has it from 30 square metres – and our recommended Superior Suite at 42 is the third category of six, seven square metres above the entry point. The 80-square-metre suite is the exception: the hotel’s largest floor plan. The hotel itself lists it as a Signature Suite with outdoor whirlpool; our travel advisors will tell you what it looks onto.

Then the package: breakfast, 50 US dollars of credit, upgrade on arrival, early check-in and late check-out – with a two-night minimum stay.

And the season: the hotel opens in May and closes in October. Anyone asking in November is asking for next year.

Our advice: Book the 42 and let the upgrade bring the 45 or the 60. In a hotel where five of six categories face the sea, the upgrade on arrival is almost always an upgrade with sea. The 80 is booked only for the whirlpool – and then with the question about the window.

Where to stay in Agios Ioannis: above the bay, with Delos opposite

The De.light Boutique Hotel Mykonos stands on the slope of Agios Ioannis in the south-west of Mykonos – four kilometres from Mykonos Town, three from the airport and one and a half from the beach at Ornos.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting Mykonos without sleeping in Mykonos – and for anyone who would rather see Delos against the evening light than the queue outside the club.

What lies within reach: the bay of Agios Ioannis with the chapel and the beach from the film, on foot; Ornos with the tavernas on the water and the boats to Delos, five minutes; and Mykonos Town with Little Venice and the windmills, ten minutes by taxi.

For orientation: Mykonos airport is ten minutes away, the New Port at Tourlos for the ferries from Piraeus a quarter of an hour. On Mykonos one drives – quad, car or taxi –, and the road to Agios Ioannis is the one on which the sun sets in the evening.

Six suites: the best hotel in Agios Ioannis from the inside

The De.light Boutique Hotel Mykonos lists six categories – all six suites, all six with an area, five with a view.

The smaller ones: the Suite twice, once at 30 to 35 and once at 35 square metres, and 42 in the Superior Suite – our recommended category –, both to the sea.

The larger ones: 45 in the Deluxe Suite and 60 in the Grand Suite, both to the sea, and 80 in the De.light Suite.

On the view: this hotel’s motif is Delos above the bay – five of six categories face it.

What applies equally to every category: breakfast for two, 50 US dollars of hotel credit, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability and early check-in and late check-out subject to availability.

What a night at the luxury hotel in Agios Ioannis costs

A night at the luxury hotel in Agios Ioannis starts at 208 euros.

The minimum stay is two nights. Included are: breakfast for two, 50 US dollars of hotel credit, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability and early check-in and late check-out.

When it is loveliest: in May and June and in September and October – the water warm, the island accessible, the prices below those of high summer.

What belongs to Mykonos: the meltemi. From July to August the north wind blows at force seven on some days, and the island is as full as it can be. That is not a warning but the calendar: Agios Ioannis lies in the south-west, on the lee side, and the pool is the place where the wind is other people’s problem. And the winter break: from November to April the hotel is closed.

When to ask early: in July and August and on the weekends around Orthodox Easter and Pentecost, when Athens comes to the island.

How long to stay: three nights – two are the minimum, and Delos needs a whole morning.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

Suites only, an infinity pool and exclusive services in a 5-star hotel

The Cyclades are the archipelago that shaped the idea of Greece: white cubes, blue domes, wind. Mykonos is their loudest island and Delos beside it their quietest – one lives off the night, the other has been uninhabited for 2,000 years. Between them lies half an hour by boat.

Three things belong to it. First Delos: the birthplace of Apollo, World Heritage, with the Terrace of the Lions and the mosaics of the Hellenistic villas – by day only, no hotel, no night. Second Mykonos Town: Little Venice with its balconies over the water, the windmills of Kato Mili and the Paraportiani, the church made of five churches. Third Ano Mera: the village in the interior with the monastery of Panagia Tourliani, where Mykonos is still a village.

The package at this hotel is breakfast, credit, upgrade and check-in and check-out.

What our travel advisors arrange most often: the 42 with the sea, for the reason stated above, the Delos morning with the first boat and the airport transfer – because ten minutes by taxi on Mykonos in August means half an hour of waiting.
