Park Hyatt Chicago · Near North SideOur advice by occasion: for lake views and short walks to the boutiques, we recommend Park Hyatt Chicago, whose windows look out on the historic Water Tower and the lake. Swimmers book The St. Regis Chicago, with a heated indoor pool at the mouth of the river.Sky-high by the water: Since May 2023, The St. Regis Chicago has welcomed guests in the 101-story tower by Studio Gang, whose green-blue glass facade picks up the colors of lake and river. For you that means a spa on its own wellness floor, afternoon tea in the Drawing Room and, in the evening, a Champagne bottle opened with a saber. In the Loop, Pendry Chicago has kept the Art Deco heritage of the Carbide & Carbon Building and was completely refitted inside in 2021; many rooms look out on the river, the lake or Millennium Park.
The St. Regis Chicago · New EastsideMore suites, new bathrooms: A USD 60 million renovation added 23 suites to Park Hyatt Chicago; since July 2022 you stay in rooms designed by Anderson/Miller, many with a deep soaking tub. In 2022 Waldorf Astoria Chicago refreshed its rooms, lobby and spa and created a new Astoria Suite of about 1,800 square feet; the Presidential Suite with two terraces was redesigned as well.
Out west, too, a lot has changed: The Drake Hotel Oak Brook grew to 153 rooms in 2019, with new interiors, meeting rooms and gardens, and has been part of the Autograph Collection ever since. Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center emerged in 2014 after a 15-month conversion: a new facade, larger public spaces on the ground floor and completely remodeled rooms and bathrooms.
Oak Brook lies in DuPage County, in the western part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Looking for nice hotels in Illinois outside the city? Guests who book a luxury hotel in Illinois here usually have good reasons: meetings in the western suburbs, a road trip by rental car or a day of shopping. Downtown Chicago and the city’s airports are less than 20 miles away.
Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center · Oak BrookFor shopping and business trips: Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center sits right at the mall, next to Neiman Marcus, Tiffany and Louis Vuitton. On the ninth floor, El Tapeo serves Spanish tapas for sharing, with sangria, cocktails and views over Oak Brook. To unwind after shopping, book one of the two Spa Suites; the fitness center is open around the clock, and pets are welcome.
For garden lovers and food lovers: The Drake Hotel Oak Brook on York Road opened in 1961 as a suburban sibling of The Drake on Michigan Avenue. Its garden is an accredited arboretum, a waystation for monarch butterflies and a sanctuary for birds. On Sundays there is a Champagne brunch, the Drake Afternoon Tea is served in the afternoon, and on Wednesdays live music plays in the Polo Lounge.
Boutiques next to Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center in the morning, afternoon tea at The Drake Hotel Oak Brook, tapas and sangria on the ninth floor in the evening: that turns a stopover into a well-rounded day. Our travel advisors reserve tea and table together with your room.
For your daily laps: At The Peninsula Chicago the 25-meter pool sits at the very top of the building, and through floor-to-ceiling glass you watch the lake as you swim. The Langham Chicago has a 67-foot indoor pool with a hot tub in its health club. At The St. Regis Chicago you swim in a heated pool with the skyline right outside the windows.
The Peninsula Chicago · StreetervilleWith history: Majolica tiles from Spain and a Neptune figure in terra-cotta decorate the pool on the 14th floor of InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile; it dates from the former Medinah Athletic Club, and Johnny Weissmuller trained here. You can also swim laps in the spa at Waldorf Astoria Chicago and in the indoor pool at JW Marriott Chicago.
For summer days and switching off: Between May and fall, cool off at The Robey Chicago in the plunge pool of the Solana pool bar, with tacos and frozen cocktails. At Nobu Hotel Chicago the Tranquility Pool with daybeds opens as early as 5 a.m., with steam rooms right next door.
Our advice: a 5-star hotel in Illinois with an indoor pool turns winter into swimming season too; outside the lake glitters, inside the water is warm. Tell us whether length, view or atmosphere matters more to you.
For a full spa day: Chuan Spa at The Langham Chicago covers around 22,000 square feet on the fourth floor; massages, facials and body treatments follow the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. At The Peninsula Chicago the spa spreads over the 19th and 20th floors: after a facial with Biologique Recherche products, you relax by the fireplace or on the sun terrace.
The Langham Chicago · River NorthWith a ritual: At The St. Regis Chicago the spa takes up around 12,000 square feet on the wellness floor; after your treatment a glass of Champagne awaits in the Celebration Bar, and couples or friends book the hotel’s spa suite. At Waldorf Astoria Chicago the spa was refreshed in 2022 and gained another treatment room for couples.
Between two shopping trips: Above Water Tower Place, The Ritz-Carlton Chicago offers a sauna, steam room, massages and a nail salon. Out west, you can book one of the two Spa Suites at Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center, with the boutiques right next door.
Our advice: if you plan a spa afternoon at your 5-star hotel in Illinois, reserve the treatment together with your room, especially on weekends.
The Midwest on your plate: At NoMI Kitchen in Park Hyatt Chicago, executive chef Terence Zubieta pairs French technique with Midwestern recipes, on the seventh floor behind floor-to-ceiling windows. The Brass Tack brasserie at Waldorf Astoria Chicago cooks with regional ingredients and a wood oven, with brunch on weekends. And at The Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago, 909 North sources many ingredients from family farms across the Midwest.
Waldorf Astoria Chicago · Gold CoastSpanish evenings: On Grant Park, The Blackstone Chicago fills the tables of Mercat a la Planxa with Catalan small plates inspired by the market halls of Barcelona, with cava and sangria. At Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center, El Tapeo and its sharing plates are the place for an evening with colleagues.
Japanese-inspired: At Nobu Hotel Chicago the menu features the classics of Nobu Matsuhisa, and a sushi bar hides behind black slatted walls. At the Chicago Athletic Association, chef partner Brian Lockwood rolls hand rolls to order at Midosuji, and at The St. Regis Chicago Miru on the 11th floor pairs Japanese small plates with a long sake list.
At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.
Classics for big nights: Italian steaks are on the menu at Torali in The Ritz-Carlton Chicago. Prime cuts and local ingredients come to the table at Michael Jordan’s Steak House in InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile. At The Talbott Hotel Chicago, LAUREL cooks with Mediterranean inspiration, with brunch daily until 3 p.m. and a patio. If you choose your 5-star hotel in Illinois by its food, reserve your Friday and Saturday tables as soon as you book.
At The Gwen Hotel Michigan Avenue Chicago, the terrace of Upstairs at The Gwen overlooks the shopping mile. Château Carbide on the 24th floor of Pendry Chicago is reserved for guests 21 and over. Boleo at Kimpton Gray Hotel Chicago has a retractable glass roof, so it stays open in winter, and at The Robey Chicago you sit in The Up Room just below the spire.
Sixties glamour out west: When The Drake Hotel Oak Brook opened in 1961, guests such as Frank Sinatra, Prince Charles and Arnold Palmer came to stay. After years of closure, local owners Jim and Tely Nagle bought the hotel in 2013, restored it over two years and reopened it in 2015; the expansion to 153 rooms followed in 2019.
The Drake Hotel Oak Brook · Oak BrookClubhouses and grand buildings: From 1893 to 2007, the Chicago Athletic Association was the clubhouse of a men’s athletic club; its Venetian Gothic facade is largely the work of Louis Christian Mullgardt. The Blackstone Chicago is a Beaux-Arts building from 1910, protected as a city landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1986. Karl M. Vitzthum designed The Midland Hotel Chicago in the Italian Renaissance Revival style; the private Midland Club once met here, and it has been a hotel since 1938.
Art Deco and modernism: The Robey Chicago carries the old name of Damen Avenue, Robey Street, and occupies an Art Deco tower from 1929 that began life as an office building. At The Gwen Hotel Michigan Avenue Chicago, the facade of the McGraw-Hill Building, sculpted by Gwen Lux, adorns the hotel; it was saved when that building was demolished in 1998 and reinstalled in 2000. Mies van der Rohe completed the IBM Building on the river in 1972; since 2013 The Langham Chicago has occupied floors 2 to 13.
At The Drake Hotel Oak Brook, the Colonial Room serves 1960s classics alongside contemporary dishes. Ask about the Sinatra Suite when you book, and we will check availability for you.
Michelin Keys: With its Keys, Michelin rates hotels as a whole, from architecture and service to a sense of place; restaurant stars are something else. The Langham Chicago and The Peninsula Chicago each hold two Keys.
The Gwen Hotel Michigan Avenue Chicago · Magnificent MileOne Key goes to Waldorf Astoria Chicago, The Gwen Hotel Michigan Avenue Chicago, Pendry Chicago and the Chicago Athletic Association, from the grand hotel in the Gold Coast to the old athletic club in the Loop.
Forbes Travel Guide: The guide rates The Langham Chicago, The Peninsula Chicago and Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago with five stars.
It awards four stars to Park Hyatt Chicago, The St. Regis Chicago and Waldorf Astoria Chicago.
The Ritz-Carlton Chicago and Thompson Chicago also appear on the guide’s Recommended list. Plaque or no plaque: which 5-star hotel in Illinois suits you ultimately depends on your plans, and that is exactly how we advise you.
Choosing a 5-star hotel in Illinois starts with one question: city or suburb? Most luxury hotels in Illinois are in Chicago, where you stay among museums, lakefront and restaurants and the L trains take you almost anywhere. Oak Brook suits you if you travel by car, have meetings out west or plan a shopping day.
Chicago Athletic Association · The LoopNorth of the river, around the shopping mile: Between the Water Tower, boutiques and Oak Street Beach, we recommend Waldorf Astoria Chicago to couples, with its cobblestone courtyard, fireplaces and terraces. If you want to be in the thick of it and spend evenings on a rooftop terrace, book The Gwen Hotel Michigan Avenue Chicago on Rush Street.
Pendry Chicago · The LoopOn the river: Architecture fans stay at The Langham Chicago, in the IBM Building, a Mies van der Rohe design that stands right on the riverbank. The St. Regis Chicago stands at the point where the river flows into the lake, looking out to Navy Pier.
Loop and Grant Park: For culture on foot, we recommend the Chicago Athletic Association across from Millennium Park and Pendry Chicago at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Place. Farther south, The Blackstone Chicago looks out over Grant Park and the lakefront, close to the Art Institute.
West of the river: Foodies stay at Nobu Hotel Chicago on Restaurant Row in the West Loop. In Wicker Park, The Robey Chicago rises above a three-way intersection, with The 606 trail and the Blue Line at the door.
Oak Brook: Business travelers and shoppers stay at Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center, right at the mall; if you are after a garden, afternoon tea and quiet, book The Drake Hotel Oak Brook on York Road.
Many travelers do both: a few nights by the lake to start, then two days out west when meetings are scheduled or a shopping day beckons. Our travel advisors coordinate both hotels and the drive between them with your plans.
Oak Brook: The Drake Hotel Oak Brook starts at 148 €, Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center at 185 €, each with breakfast for two.
The Westin Chicago River North · River NorthIn the city: On the river, The Westin Chicago River North starts at 150 €, on Grant Park Le Méridien Essex Chicago at 166 €; in the Loop, Kimpton Gray Hotel Chicago is from 191 € and the Chicago Athletic Association from 214 €.
For the two hotels with two Michelin Keys, you pay from 378 € at The Peninsula Chicago and from 645 € at The Langham Chicago; The St. Regis Chicago starts at 568 €. The table shows 25 hotels by location; you will find all other luxury hotels in Illinois with today’s prices in the hotel list below.

Breakfast and credits: Book through suitespot and breakfast is included at every luxury hotel in Illinois, usually for two, at some hotels as a daily credit: USD 60 per room at Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago, USD 45 at Waldorf Astoria Chicago. Hotels often add a USD 100 credit, Thompson Chicago USD 75. Subject to availability, you also get an upgrade and early check-in or late check-out.
Minimum stay: The benefits at the Chicago Athletic Association and The Talbott Hotel Chicago apply from two nights; at all other hotels one night is enough.
Points: By far the most common program among the luxury hotels in Illinois is Marriott Bonvoy, which also covers The Drake Hotel Oak Brook and Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center out west. World of Hyatt applies at Park Hyatt Chicago, for example, and at Waldorf Astoria Chicago you earn double Hilton Honors points.
On top of that come IHG One Rewards, ALL (Accor), Brilliant by Langham and I Prefer. Because suitespot books at the hotel’s direct rate, points and status nights go to your account as usual.
Illinois through the year: In spring, parks and gardens bloom; in summer the lakefront, rooftop terraces and long evenings beckon; in fall the trees in Oak Brook turn color. Winter is the time for museums, concerts, spas and indoor pools, often with a snowy skyline outside the window. For trade fairs and big festivals, secure your 5-star hotel in Illinois as early as you can.
How long to stay: For Chicago alone we recommend three to four nights; if you add Oak Brook, plan one or two extra nights.

It depends on your trip. For a spa and pool high above the city we recommend The Peninsula Chicago, for lake views and new suites Park Hyatt Chicago, and for culture on foot the Chicago Athletic Association on Millennium Park. If you would rather stay outside the city, The Drake Hotel Oak Brook and its garden are a lovely choice.
You can choose between two addresses. The Drake Hotel Oak Brook is a 1961 classic with an arboretum, afternoon tea and live music in the Polo Lounge. Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center sits right at the mall, with tapas on the ninth floor and two Spa Suites. Both belong to Marriott Bonvoy, and breakfast for two is included through suitespot.
Almost all of them. Most are spread across the Magnificent Mile, the riverfront and the Loop; in addition there are two hotels in Oak Brook, less than 20 miles west of downtown. There you stay at The Drake Hotel Oak Brook or at Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center.
The Langham Chicago, The Peninsula Chicago and Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago hold five Forbes stars. Three more hotels have four stars, including Park Hyatt Chicago.
In the indoor pools of the luxury hotels in Illinois, such as the 25-meter pool at The Peninsula Chicago high above the city, the heated pool at The St. Regis Chicago or the historic 1929 pool at InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile. From May into fall, the pool bar at The Robey Chicago opens as well.
The Langham Chicago and The Peninsula Chicago each have two Michelin Keys. The Gwen Hotel Michigan Avenue Chicago and Pendry Chicago have one Key each, as do two more hotels in the Gold Coast and the Loop.
Yes, at most of them. Marriott Bonvoy applies at 15 hotels, including The Drake Hotel Oak Brook and Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center. World of Hyatt is available at the Chicago Athletic Association, for example, and Hilton Honors points count double at Waldorf Astoria Chicago; IHG One Rewards, ALL (Accor), Brilliant by Langham and I Prefer are also represented. Because we book at the hotel’s rate, your status nights are credited too.
The Blue Line runs from O’Hare to Damen station, right outside The Robey Chicago. The Langham Chicago can also be reached on the Blue Line, or it is about 18 miles by car. Out west, The Drake Hotel Oak Brook is less than 20 miles from the city’s airports.
For conventions downtown we recommend Fairmont Millennium Park Chicago, with plenty of meeting space, and JW Marriott Chicago in the financial district of the Loop, where the Burnham Ballroom is ready for receptions. Out west, Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center is right at the mall, and The Drake Hotel Oak Brook has had new meeting rooms since 2019.
Pets are welcome at Le Méridien Chicago - Oakbrook Center out west, for example, and in the city at Thompson Chicago, Kimpton Gray Hotel Chicago and Pendry Chicago. Tell us the type and size of your pet, and we will check the rules in advance.
Every season has its charm. Summer brings the lakefront, rooftop terraces and festivals, fall clear days and colorful gardens out west. Winter belongs to museums, theaters and warm indoor pools, and in spring the parks come to life. For major trade fairs, it pays to ask early.
