Spa Hotels in Germany: Your Guide to Spas, Pools and Saunas

The leading spa hotels in Germany are rarely in a city. They sit on the shores of Lake Tegernsee and the Spitzingsee, at around 1,000 meters in the Bavarian Alps, in the Black Forest and in Baden-Baden, with a few in the Bergisches Land, the Taunus hills and on Sylt. At these twelve houses, wellness means something concrete: spas of up to around 3,000 m², outdoor pools heated even in winter, saunas scented with herbs and Swiss pine or facing the mountains, an onsen pool at 42 °C and treatments in private spa suites.Schloss ElmauSchloss Elmau · ElmauWhich house suits you depends on how you like to switch off. For couples we recommend Schloss Elmau: it has six spas, including the Badehaus for guests aged 16 and over with three infinity pools. If you want a big spa right on the water, stay at Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt on Lake Tegernsee: its spa covers around 3,000 m² and has a 28-meter indoor pool. Every treatment there takes place in a private spa suite.

For families we recommend Hotel Traube Tonbach in the northern Black Forest, with a year-round heated outdoor pool, a children's pool and childcare; food lovers also book a table at the Schwarzwaldstube, where Torsten Michel cooks with three Michelin stars. And if you want to pair your spa stay with a spa town, book Brenners Park Hotel Baden-Baden on Lichtentaler Allee, whose spa in Villa Stéphanie includes Brenners Medical Care.

No booking fee: through suitespot, the same rate costs exactly what it costs direct with the hotel – and the benefits come on top.

Where to stay: spa hotels in Germany from the Alps to the Black Forest and Sylt

The twelve houses are spread across Germany, but most of them are in the south. In the Alps the mountain view comes with the pool, on the lakes it is your own spot on the shore, in the Black Forest the woods outside your window.Althoff Seehotel ÜberfahrtAlthoff Seehotel Überfahrt · TegernseeOn Lake Tegernsee and the Spitzingsee you stay by the water. Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt stands right on the shore of the Egerner Bucht in Rottach-Egern, with a private lake beach and about 60 kilometers to Munich. Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach lies in Weissach in the Tegernsee valley, with its own lido on the lake and a mill stream running through the garden. Higher up, Arabella Alpenhotel am Spitzingsee sits at about 1,100 meters directly on the Spitzingsee. If you are looking for a wellness resort in Germany with lake access, this is the place. Our pick: Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt.

In the mountains and the Chiemgau it gets quiet. Schloss Elmau lies secluded in the Elmau valley at about 1,000 meters, between the Wetterstein and Karwendel ranges near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Kempinski Berchtesgaden stands alone on the Eckerbichl hilltop at Obersalzberg, also at about 1,000 meters above Berchtesgaden and some 30 minutes from Salzburg Airport. In the health resort town of Grassau, between Lake Chiemsee and the Kampenwand, you will find the resort Das Achental. Our pick: Schloss Elmau. Our guide to spa hotels in Bavaria compares every house between the Alps and the lakes.

Your suitespot benefits
  • Breakfast for two, every day
  • Room upgrade subject to availability
  • Hotel credit, e.g. US$100
  • Early check-in and late check-out
  • VIP service and personal advice
  • Points and status in the hotel programme
Over two nights, that adds up to around €500 in value on average – depending on hotel, rate and availability.

No booking fee: you pay the same price for your rate as for the same rate booked direct with the hotel – suitespot adds no mark-up, and the benefits come on top.

In the Black Forest and Baden-Baden forest meets spa town. Hotel Traube Tonbach lies in the Tonbach valley near Baiersbronn, in the Black Forest National Park region. In Baden-Baden you stay at Brenners Park Hotel Baden-Baden in its own park on the River Oos, or at Steigenberger Icon Europäischer Hof Baden-Baden right on the Kurgarten, opposite the Kurhaus and casino. Our pick: Hotel Traube Tonbach.

In the west and north three houses sit close to a big city or the sea. Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg crowns the Bensberg terrace in Bergisch Gladbach, with views of Cologne Cathedral and about 30 minutes by train to central Cologne. Falkenstein Grand Königstein lies in a six-hectare private park on the southern slopes of the Taunus, overlooking the Frankfurt skyline. And Landhaus Stricker Sylt stands in Tinnum in the heart of Sylt, about two kilometers from Westerland, in its own park with a pond. Our pick: Landhaus Stricker Sylt. City hotels and every other address are in our guide to luxury hotels in Germany.

Our travel advisors' insider tip

The region tells you little about the price. In the Tegernsee valley, Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach starts at 330 € and Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt, right on the lake, at 574 €. In Baden-Baden, Steigenberger Icon Europäischer Hof Baden-Baden at 220 € and Brenners Park Hotel Baden-Baden at 694 € are only a few minutes' walk apart. So choose the landscape and the spa first, then the budget – our travel advisors will gladly suggest the right match.

Spa & wellness: pools, saunas and onsen at spa resorts in Germany

If you choose a luxury spa hotel in Germany by its spa, look first at water, warmth and quiet. Among the largest spas in this selection are two houses in the Tegernsee valley, each with around 3,000 m².Spa & Resort Bachmair WeissachSpa & Resort Bachmair Weissach · ReitrainAt Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt, the 4 elements spa by Althoff reopened in August 2026 after a full redesign. The spa covers around 3,000 m² with a 28-meter indoor pool, a hot pool, a heated 17-meter outdoor pool, a Finnish sauna, an event sauna and a bio sauna, a steam bath and the Silence Lounge. Treatments take place only in private spa suites with their own bathroom. The MIZU ONSEN SPA at Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach covers more than 3,000 m² including the Family Spa and follows Japanese models: an onsen pool at 42 °C, cold plunges at 2 and 10 °C, an outdoor brine pool at 32 °C and a natural pool fed by the mill stream.

At the resort Das Achental, the Achental Spa covers 2,000 m², with a warm infinity pool, a herbal sauna with a copper kettle, a stone sauna, a Finnish Swiss pine sauna, a brine steam bath, four experience showers and relaxation rooms with floating loungers. In central Baden-Baden, THE VAULT Spa & Suites at Steigenberger Icon Europäischer Hof Baden-Baden lies partly in the vaults of a former bank. This spa covers 1,300 m² on two levels, with a vitality pool, several saunas, a steam room and bookable private spa suites; it is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm.

The ASCARA Beauty Spa & Fitness at Falkenstein Grand Königstein covers 1,200 m² in its own building, reached through the historic tunnels. Inside are saunas, a quiet lounge, an indoor whirlpool at 36 °C, treatments and a daily breathing circle. At Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg, the 4 elements spa by Althoff combines, on 1,000 m², an indoor pool under a starry-sky ceiling, a sanarium, a Finnish sauna, a steam room and an ice fountain with Ayurvedic Abhyanga and the 4 Elements Signature Massage.

On 850 m², the AlpenSpa at Arabella Alpenhotel am Spitzingsee offers a brine pool with whirlpool, a Finnish sauna, a mountain-flower sauna, a mountain-farm sauna and a steam bath, all with views of the lake and the mountains. At Landhaus Stricker Sylt in Tinnum, the spa of around 500 m² has a fireplace lounge, a Finnish sauna, a bio sauna, a steam bath, a barrel sauna in the garden and a large, temperate indoor pool.

Schloss Elmau has no fewer than six spas: the Badehaus for guests aged 16 and over with three infinity pools, saunas, a brine steam bath and 17 treatment rooms; an Oriental hammam of 500 m²; the Shantigiri adult spa with a Japanese onsen at 40 °C; the Shantigiri family spa; the Hideaway Family Spa; and a Nature Spa on the Ferchenbach stream with a natural pool and ice bathing. TCM, Jivamukti yoga, Pilates, Taiji and longevity retreats round it off.

At Brenners Park Hotel Baden-Baden, Brenners Spa & Wellbeing occupies the historic Villa Stéphanie: treatment rooms, some with their own park terrace, a Finnish sauna, a bio sauna, a steam bath, an open-air area and a cold plunge pool, plus Brenners Medical Care with check-ups, naturopathy and physiotherapy. Hotel Traube Tonbach is all about water: a year-round heated outdoor pool, sports and exercise pools, three whirlpools, a relaxation pool in Haus Kohlwald, several saunas, a sanarium and a blossom steam bath.

At Kempinski Berchtesgaden you swim in the indoor pool (15 x 9 m, 29 °C) with mountain views, then move on to the Finnish sauna, the tepidarium or the meditation lounge with waterbeds. The round outdoor pool at 33 °C has been closed for construction since October 5, 2026; the indoor pool, saunas and treatments remain open.

Swimming outdoors, even in winter

For that we recommend Schloss Elmau: the 25-meter rooftop infinity pool of the Badehaus is kept at 32 °C in winter, for guests aged 16 and over. At Hotel Traube Tonbach the large outdoor pool is heated all year, and at Falkenstein Grand Königstein you swim in the year-round heated outdoor pool (8 x 15 m) with a view of the Frankfurt skyline, open from 7 am to 10 pm.

Quiet for couples, spas for families: a wellness retreat in Germany for two or with kids

For couples: at Schloss Elmau, the Badehaus and the Shantigiri spa at the Retreat are reserved for adults, the Badehaus for guests aged 16 and over. In the evening you dine at Summit with Mediterranean food or at Summit Pavilion with sushi, both adults only. At Arabella Alpenhotel am Spitzingsee, too, the sauna area is for guests aged 16 and over, and from 12:30 to 3 pm the spa observes a quiet period without children under twelve.Arabella Alpenhotel am SpitzingseeArabella Alpenhotel am Spitzingsee · SpitzingseeFor total privacy, book a private spa suite. At Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt every treatment takes place in such a suite, each at least 38 m² with its own bathroom and relaxation area. At Steigenberger Icon Europäischer Hof Baden-Baden you can book a spa suite in the old bank vault just for yourselves.

For families: Hotel Traube Tonbach has childcare at the Kids Court and an adventure playground, plus its own children's pool; the spa offers treatments for children aged 4 to 14. At Schloss Elmau the Kids Club looks after children aged 2 to 5, while older kids head to the Kids & Teens Club. In the Hideaway Family Spa, the 25-meter pool at 32 °C hosts swimming lessons for children.

  • Room upgrade subject to availability
  • Hotel credit, e.g. US$100
  • Early check-in and late check-out
  • VIP service and personal advice

Over two nights, that adds up to around €500 in value on average – depending on hotel, rate and availability.

At Brenners Park Hotel Baden-Baden, the Alois' Nest kids club looks after children aged 3 to 12, babysitting is available, and the Roman-style pool has a daily kids' splash hour. Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach has a Kids & Teens Club from age 3, babysitting and a Family Spa with a 15-meter pool and a children's pool with a slide. And at Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt, the 2026 modernization added a daily Kids Club and a sheltered family area with its own children's pool.

Taking children to the spa: at Kempinski Berchtesgaden there are dedicated kids' spa hours, at Landhaus Stricker Sylt children may use the indoor pool at any time with an adult, and at Arabella Alpenhotel am Spitzingsee the brine pool has a separate section for toddlers. Our travel advisors will tell you which house suits your children's ages.

Dining and activities at spa hotels in Germany: Michelin stars, golf and mountains

After the spa, several houses have a Michelin-starred restaurant. At Hotel Traube Tonbach, Torsten Michel cooks at the Schwarzwaldstube with three Michelin stars, which the restaurant has held since 1992; at 1789, Florian Stolte serves Far Eastern-inspired menus with one star. The es:senz at the resort Das Achental also holds three stars, with Edip Sigl cooking pared-back menus from Chiemgau produce.Hotel Traube TonbachHotel Traube Tonbach · BaiersbronnTwo Michelin stars go to the Vendôme at Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg under Dennis Kuckuck, the Gourmet Restaurant PUR at Kempinski Berchtesgaden under Ulrich Heimann and the Ikigai at Schloss Elmau, where Christoph Rainer cooks French-Japanese cuisine. Restaurant Überfahrt at Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt has one star under Cornelia Fischer.

Lighter fare comes in a bathrobe: at Schloss Elmau you lunch at Ananda in the Badehaus, at Brenners Park Hotel Baden-Baden at the restaurant Le Salon with its garden terrace in front of Villa Stéphanie, and at Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt the new spa brought THE BISTRO. Restaurant Landgut Falkenstein at Falkenstein Grand Königstein has its own health menu.

No booking fee: you pay the same price for your rate as for the same rate booked direct with the hotel – suitespot adds no mark-up, and the benefits come on top.

Golfers stay at the resort Das Achental: its own 18-hole championship course by Thomas Himmel is right next door, with a PGA golf school. At Kempinski Berchtesgaden a 9-hole course is next door, and in winter you reach the Gutshof ski area directly. At Schloss Elmau a 45-minute hike takes you to the Elmauer Alm at 1,200 meters, and up to 150 concerts a year fill the evenings.

On Lake Tegernsee you row from Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt across the historic ferry crossing to the Point peninsula. And at Landhaus Stricker Sylt in Tinnum, host Holger Bodendorf cooks at Bodendorf's with one Michelin star.

For a Michelin dinner after the spa

Book two nights so there is time for both. At Hotel Traube Tonbach, a dinner for two at Restaurant Silberberg on the day of arrival is included through suitespot for stays of two nights or more. For the Schwarzwaldstube and es:senz, we suggest requesting the table together with the room – es:senz closes seasonally, for example from November 2 to 15, 2026.

FAQ: spa hotels in Germany

How much does a night at a spa hotel in Germany cost?

In this selection, rates start at 169 € at Falkenstein Grand Königstein and 176 € at Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg. At the top end are Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt from 574 € and Brenners Park Hotel Baden-Baden from 694 €. Breakfast for two is included at all twelve houses, and the suitespot benefits come on top.

Which spa hotel in Germany is best for couples?

There is no fixed ranking, but for couples we recommend Schloss Elmau: the Badehaus with three infinity pools is for guests aged 16 and over, and the Shantigiri spa and the Summit and Summit Pavilion restaurants are adults only. On Lake Tegernsee, every treatment at Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt takes place in a private spa suite. And at the resort Das Achental you combine a 2,000 m² spa with an evening at the three-star es:senz.

Which spa hotels in Germany have the largest spas?

Among the largest are two spas in the Tegernsee valley: the spa at Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt covers around 3,000 m² with a 28-meter indoor pool, and the MIZU ONSEN SPA at Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach more than 3,000 m² including the Family Spa. The Achental Spa at the resort Das Achental has 2,000 m². In Baden-Baden, the spa at Steigenberger Icon Europäischer Hof Baden-Baden covers 1,300 m², partly in the vaults of a former bank.

Which spa hotel in Germany is good for families?

Hotel Traube Tonbach has childcare at the Kids Court, a children's pool and spa treatments for children aged 4 to 14. Schloss Elmau has a Kids Club from age 2, a Kids & Teens Club and dedicated family spas. Brenners Park Hotel Baden-Baden looks after children aged 3 to 12 at Alois' Nest, and Spa & Resort Bachmair Weissach has a Kids & Teens Club from age 3 and a Family Spa with a slide.

Which spa hotels have an outdoor pool heated in winter?

At Hotel Traube Tonbach the large outdoor pool is heated all year, as is the outdoor pool (8 x 15 m) with skyline views at Falkenstein Grand Königstein. At Schloss Elmau the 25-meter rooftop infinity pool of the Badehaus is kept at 32 °C in winter, for ages 16 and over. At Kempinski Berchtesgaden the outdoor pool has been closed for construction since October 5, 2026, while the indoor pool stays open.

Can I earn points at spa hotels in Germany?

Yes, at seven of the twelve houses. The Leaders Club applies at Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt and Schloss Elmau, Marriott Bonvoy at houses including Arabella Alpenhotel am Spitzingsee, and GHA Discovery at Kempinski Berchtesgaden. I Prefer and H Rewards apply at one house each. Because suitespot books at direct rates, you keep your points and status benefits.

Which spa hotels offer medical services?

At Brenners Park Hotel Baden-Baden, Brenners Medical Care with check-ups, naturopathy, physiotherapy and aesthetic medicine is part of the spa. Schloss Elmau has a TCM & Medical Spa and longevity retreats. The ASCARA spa at Falkenstein Grand Königstein offers medical services, metabolic analysis and personal training.

How do I recognize a good luxury spa hotel in Germany?

Stars alone say little about the spa. Look at its size, indoor and outdoor pools, the number of saunas and whether there are adults-only areas or a family spa. Michelin Keys, which the Michelin Guide awards to hotels, are another pointer: Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt, Hotel Traube Tonbach and Schloss Elmau hold three Keys. Our travel advisors will gladly help you choose.
