Casa Polanco · Miguel HidalgoWhich hotel suits you depends on how you want to experience the city. For art lovers, we recommend Casa Polanco: a restored 1940s villa opposite Parque Lincoln with only 19 rooms and suites and works by Graciela Iturbide. If you want to combine spa time and shopping, book Las Alcobas Mexico City on Avenida Presidente Masaryk, with Mexican healing rituals at Aurora Spa.You can often spot a boutique hotel in Mexico City by its building: a hacienda, a 1940s villa or an Art Deco block that architects and designers have reimagined for a small number of guests. The hotels in this selection have between 19 and 50 rooms; only Andaz Mexico City Condesa is much larger with 213 rooms, set in a heritage-listed Art Deco complex. Most are in Polanco and around Condesa and Roma, with single addresses in the Centro Histórico, Lomas de Chapultepec and leafy Tlalpan.
Andaz Mexico City Condesa · HipódromoPolanco: Casa Polanco sits opposite Parque Lincoln, close to Bosque de Chapultepec. Las Alcobas Mexico City is on Avenida Presidente Masaryk, a short walk from Polanquito, the Auditorio Nacional and Chapultepec Park. Kimpton Virgilio Mexico City is on a quiet street in Polanco III Sección, also steps from Parque Lincoln, with the Chapultepec museums within walking distance.
Condesa DF Mexico City · CondesaCondesa and Roma: On tree-lined Avenida Veracruz, the border between Condesa and Roma, Condesa DF Mexico City overlooks Parque España. Andaz Mexico City Condesa is in La Condesa, steps from Parque México and about 15 minutes from the Zócalo and the Centro Histórico.
Centro Histórico and Reforma: Círculo Mexicano Mexico City is in the heart of the Centro Histórico, steps from the Zócalo; from the rooftop you see the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Templo Mayor and the Torre Latinoamericana. VOLGA Mexico City is in Colonia Cuauhtémoc, one block from Paseo de la Reforma and a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Ángel de la Independencia and from Roma and Condesa.
Lomas de Chapultepec and Tlalpan: Alexander Mexico City occupies part of the Torre Virreyes skyscraper in Lomas Virreyes, the city's financial hub, overlooking Chapultepec Park and a few minutes from Reforma and Polanco. A different world: Hacienda Peña Pobre Mexico City, in a quiet part of Tlalpan in the south, right next to Bosque de Tlalpan and 20 to 30 minutes by car from San Ángel and Coyoacán.
Two hotels have bicycles for guests: Condesa DF Mexico City on Avenida Veracruz, about 1.5 kilometers from Chapultepec Park, and Kimpton Virgilio Mexico City in Polanco, which also hosts an evening social hour. Our travel advisors are happy to help you choose the neighborhood that fits your plans.
Our pick for history is Hacienda Peña Pobre Mexico City. In the 16th century the land belonged to Martín Cortés, son of Hernán Cortés; the 17th-century hacienda was part of the Loreto and Peña Pobre paper mills, which operated until 1985. Today it is protected by INAH and has been a boutique hotel since 2010, hung with original works by contemporary Mexican painters.
Hacienda Peña Pobre Mexico City · TlalpanIn the Centro Histórico, Grupo Habita turned the 19th-century residential building where Manuel Álvarez Bravo was born, and where he shot “El ensueño” in 1931, into Círculo Mexicano Mexico City. The studio Ambrosi | Etchegaray redesigned it, the hotel opened in 2020, and photographs by Álvarez Bravo, selected with his foundation, hang throughout.
Kimpton Virgilio Mexico City · PolancoThe 20th century in three hotels: Condesa DF Mexico City opened in 2005 in a 1928 French neoclassical building restored by architect Javier Sánchez; India Mahdavi designed the interiors and furniture around the open triangular patio with its white shutters. Casa Polanco is a 1940s Neocolonial family mansion that Claudio Gantous restored over four years and joined to a modernist annex. At Kimpton Virgilio Mexico City, a 1940s Art Deco apartment building became a hotel, with rooms around a planted atrium and mid-century furniture by Goirand Hermanos of Guadalajara.
Contemporary design: JSa Arquitectura built VOLGA Mexico City in 2023 in exposed concrete around a skylit courtyard, the “urban cenote”, with rooms arranged like theater boxes on balconies. At Las Alcobas Mexico City, Yabu Pushelberg transformed a former palatial residence on Masaryk, complete with a dramatic spiral staircase. Andaz Mexico City Condesa occupies the restored Conjunto Aristos by José Luis Benlliure Galán, a city heritage site, with Art Deco details and colors inspired by Luis Barragán. And at Alexander Mexico City, Lorena Cherem and Linda Masri (Ambia Studio) furnished the suites with Italian pieces.
Michelin Keys: Casa Polanco holds two Michelin Keys; Hacienda Peña Pobre Mexico City, VOLGA Mexico City and Alexander Mexico City hold one each. Michelin Keys recognize hotels, not restaurants. Las Alcobas Mexico City holds four stars in the Forbes Travel Guide.
Truly small is Casa Polanco: 19 individually designed rooms and suites, a glass-roofed atrium and, in the library, a drinks trolley with decanters as an honesty bar. The spa works with LUUM, a Yucatán brand based on Melipona honey, and the glazed treatment cabin looks onto the park. At Hacienda Peña Pobre Mexico City you stay in around 20 suites that feel like apartments, with kitchen, living and dining areas; the Duplex Suite sleeps four.
Alexander Mexico City · Lomas de Chapultepec IV SeccAlexander Mexico City has only suites: 26 of them, from 48 to 117 m², furnished by Poltrona Frau, Minotti and Rimadesio, plus a spa with two treatment rooms and steam cabins. Las Alcobas Mexico City has 35 rooms on seven floors; the penthouse suites open onto private garden terraces, and the Pasaje Penthouse has an indoor/outdoor fireplace. Service includes a bath butler, Bvlgari amenities and twice-daily housekeeping.
At Círculo Mexicano Mexico City, 18 of the 25 rooms have a private skylit patio. VOLGA Mexico City has 50 rooms, 16 of them suites, with private balconies over the inner courtyard. And Condesa DF Mexico City has 40 rooms, 24/7 room service and bicycles for guests.
At Kimpton Virgilio Mexico City, pets are welcome with no fees and no weight limits. Andaz Mexico City Condesa has its own terrace for guests with dogs, the Wooftop Beer Garden & Canine Club on the second floor, and pets are also welcome at El Patio restaurant at Condesa DF Mexico City. Hacienda Peña Pobre Mexico City accepts pets too, with Bosque de Tlalpan right next door.
For evenings above the city, we recommend the rooftops. At Condesa DF Mexico City, Morimoto-trained chef Keisuke Harada serves sushi with Mexican touches on the Terraza, with views of Parque España and Chapultepec Castle; from Thursday to Saturday it stays open until 1 a.m. On the rooftop terrace of Círculo Mexicano Mexico City, Enid Velez cooks regional, seasonal food from different Mexican states at Comedor Mexicano, while the bar pours organic wines and traditional mezcals with snacks from an open comal.
Círculo Mexicano Mexico City · Center of Mexico CityVOLGA Mexico City combines three venues: contemporary Mexican cuisine at ELORA in the courtyard, tastings at long communal tables in the minimalist Mezcaleria, and the rooftop day club with cabanas and DJ sets. At Kimpton Virgilio Mexico City, executive chef Carlos Juárez Soto serves tapas with Mexican influences at Pepe Mesa Española, with live music or flamenco on Friday evenings; up by the pool, La Caña bar pairs pisco and cachaça with ceviches and tiraditos.
For food lovers: at the oval Alexander Bar at Alexander Mexico City, executive chef Anna Sophia Serrano builds the menu around Petrossian caviar. Casa Polanco serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea at Veranda, under the atrium's glass roof. At Las Alcobas Mexico City, Anatol offers seasonal farm-to-table small plates, Mexican with Mediterranean touches; breakfast and brunch are reserved for hotel guests.
On Sundays, the brunch at El Patio at Condesa DF Mexico City is worth it: Antonio Balderas cooks seasonal Mexican food with French technique, and the brunch changes every week. At Hacienda Peña Pobre Mexico City, you breakfast and dine in the garden and library, and there is a speakeasy bar as well.
