Hôtel Barrière Le Normandy Deauville · City CenterFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Deauville and chose one: a luxury hotel that has stood opposite the beach since 1912 – with thirteen categories in which the sea costs not one square metre. What that means for booking is below. Our choice for Deauville is the Hôtel Barrière Le Normandy Deauville on Rue Jean Mermoz, in the centre, a few metres from the Planches. In our ranking it stands at 4.3 out of 5, and a night starts at 371 euros.
Why we recommend it: Because it is the building every picture of Deauville shows: opened in 1912, the half-timbered palace with the green shutters that closed for six months in 2016 for the first time since it opened, to be renovated – toile de Jouy in the rooms, new bathrooms, the restaurant La Belle Époque with its Sunday brunch, the bar where Churchill was a regular. Add 271 rooms and suites, the Spa Diane Barrière with pool, sauna and hammam and the suite named after the film shot here in 1966: Un Homme et Une Femme. Our recommended category is called Prestige.
In this hotel the sea costs not one square metre – and the recommended category faces the town.
Thirteen categories, and almost every one promises a particular view. And three times the same size comes with a different view: the Deluxe room at 28 square metres facing the town and the Sea Deluxe at 28 facing the sea; the Prestige Suite at 46 facing the town and at 46 facing the sea; the Deluxe Suite at 55 facing the garden and the Sea Deluxe Suite at 55 facing the sea. Three pairs, same area, different window.
Our recommended category is called Prestige: 35 square metres, the largest room – with a view of the town. We recommend the area here, not the beach.
And the package: breakfast, welcome gift, early check-in and late check-out. The view you book is the window you wake up at – the booking is binding.
Our advice: Book the sea by name, because it costs nothing but the name. Sea Deluxe at 28 if it is to be a room; Prestige Suite Sea at 46 or Sea Deluxe Suite at 55 if it is to be a suite – each the same area as the town side. Anyone wanting the 35 of the recommendation gets it facing the town only; tell our travel advisors then that you know. And anyone wanting the film books the 58 with the title.
The Hôtel Barrière Le Normandy Deauville stands on Rue Jean Mermoz in the centre of Deauville, between casino and beach – the Planches a few metres away, Deauville-Trouville station a good kilometre, Honfleur thirteen kilometres up the coast.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone taking Deauville as a weekend: Friday by train from Paris, Saturday beach and racecourse, Sunday brunch and back – without a car and without a metre too many.
What lies within reach: the Planches with the cabins bearing the names of festival guests since 1975, two minutes; the casino and the La Touques racecourse, where the yearling sales run in August, on foot; and Trouville on the other side of the Touques, the fishing town with the market hall, across the bridge.
For orientation: the train from Paris Saint-Lazare takes a good two hours; the station lies between Deauville and Trouville. Honfleur with its old harbour is twenty minutes away, the D-Day beaches an hour to the west. In Deauville one walks; the car stays in the garage.
The Hôtel Barrière Le Normandy Deauville lists thirteen categories, eight of them suites.
The rooms: 26 square metres in the Superior facing the town, 28 in the Deluxe facing the town, in the Sea Deluxe facing the sea and in the Terrace Prestige facing the garden, 35 in the Prestige facing the town.
The suites: 40 facing the courtyard, 46 in the Prestige Suite facing the town and facing the sea, 50 in the Family Suite, 55 in the Deluxe Suite facing the garden and in the Sea Deluxe Suite facing the sea, 58 in the suite Un Homme et Une Femme and 100 in the Presidential Suite facing the town.
On the view: this hotel’s motif is the beach with the Planches and the parasols – three categories look out on it: Sea Deluxe, Prestige Suite Sea and Sea Deluxe Suite. Six categories see the town, two the garden, one the courtyard.
What applies equally to every category: breakfast for two, a welcome gift and early check-in and late check-out subject to availability.
A night at the luxury hotel in Deauville starts at 371 euros.
The suitespot benefits apply here from the first night. Included are: breakfast for two, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability, a welcome gift.
When it is loveliest: in June and in September, when the beach is warm and the Parisians are not yet or no longer there – and on a winter weekend, when the Planches are empty, the wind comes off the sea and the spa is the reason.
What belongs to Deauville: August with the races and the sales, and the first week of September with the festival of American film – then the hotel is the centre of the town and booked out weeks ahead. That is not a warning but the calendar.
When to ask early: for the festival and the August races months ahead, for any weekend from May to September, and for the suite with the film title on any date.
How long to stay: two nights for beach, Trouville and the Sunday brunch – three if Honfleur is added.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
The Côte Fleurie is the strip of Norman coast between the Seine estuary and Cabourg – half-timbered villas, racehorses, oysters and a light that brought the Impressionists here before the Parisians came. Deauville has been its centre since the Duke of Morny bought the dunes in 1860.

First the Planches: the boardwalk on the beach, laid in azobé wood in 1923, with the Art Deco cabins and the names from Kirk Douglas to Clint Eastwood. Second Trouville: the other side of the river, older, with the fish market and Flaubert’s beach – where Deauville goes when it wants to eat. Third Honfleur: the old harbour with the narrow façades where Boudin and Monet began Impressionism.
The package at this hotel is breakfast, time benefit and gift.
What our travel advisors arrange most often: the table for Sunday brunch at La Belle Époque, because it cannot be had without a reservation, the festival weekend months ahead, and the sea side by name – for the reason stated above.
