Zell am Ziller sits where the Zillertal divides: south the valley runs on to Mayrhofen and the glacier, east the road climbs the Gerlos Pass towards the Krimml falls. The village itself is old, and so is the tradition – this is where the Gauderfest takes place, the oldest spring festival in the Alps.Das Posthotel Zell in the ZillertalDas Posthotel Zell in the Zillertal · ZellbergebenFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Zell am Ziller and picked one: a single luxury hotel, where the suite is not the exception but the rule.

They come with breakfast for two, a hotel credit of 50 US dollars, a room upgrade subject to availability and early check-in and late check-out – both.

There is one condition, exactly one. It is the reason we like explaining this destination.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

The benefits here apply from the second night. In a city that would be an annoyance – there most people come for one night, and the condition rules out precisely that pattern.

In the Zillertal it is exactly the other way round. People who come here stay a week, in winter often two. A two-night threshold therefore affects nobody who was coming anyway. It applies, but it costs you nothing.

A condition is therefore always to be weighed against the reason for the trip. The same clause is a problem at an airport hotel and a footnote at the head of a valley.

What you should look at instead are the categories: six of seven are suites. So you are not booking a room and wondering whether the upgrade will come – you start above what would be the upgrade’s target elsewhere.

The largest unit is the Zillergrundl Salettl at 64 square metres, alongside the Deluxe Suite at 41.

Our advice: tell us the number of nights and whether you are skiing or walking. From two nights the condition is settled, and after that the only question is which of the six suites suits you – we sort that out beforehand.

Where to stay in Zell am Ziller: on the Zellberg above the valley

The Posthotel stands on the Zellberg, on the slope above the village. In the Zillertal that is the difference that counts: down in the valley runs the through road, up on the slope there is quiet and the view across the valley.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who does not want to go out again in the evening – which here is the usual pattern.

What is within reach: the Zillertal Arena, the ski area above Zell and Gerlos with runs down into the valley; the Zillertalbahn, the narrow-gauge railway running through the valley since 1902, in summer under steam; and up the valley Mayrhofen with the Hintertux glacier, the only ski area in Austria open all year.

East the road crosses the Gerlos Pass into the Hohe Tauern national park and on to the Krimml falls, the highest in Europe.

For orientation: Innsbruck is about an hour away, Munich a good two and a half, Salzburg roughly two.

Suites: the best hotel in Zell am Ziller from the inside

The Posthotel Zell im Zillertal carries seven categories, and six of them are suites. A suite share this high is rare.

The largest unit is the Zillergrundl Salettl at 64 square metres – named after the Zillergrund, the innermost head of the valley east of Mayrhofen. Then comes the Deluxe Suite at 41 square metres.

For the remaining five categories, our travel advisors confirm the exact size before you book. Since six of seven are suites, you can assume the choice will not turn on square metres but on layout and position in the building.

On the Zellberg, a view across the valley comes with the location, and if it matters to you we ask before booking.

Tell our travel advisors how many of you there are and how long you are staying. With six suites to choose from, the conversation beforehand is worth more than any list.

What a night in a luxury hotel in Zell am Ziller costs

A night in a luxury hotel in Zell am Ziller costs 324 €.

The benefits apply from the second night. As explained above, that is not a restriction here but a formality – in the Zillertal hardly anyone stays a single night.

When the skiing happens: from December to April. The Zillertal Arena reaches from Zell to Gerlos, and anyone wanting longer drives up the valley to the Hintertux glacier.

When the walking happens: from June to September. The huts are open, the high paths clear, and the cable cars run for walkers instead of skiers.

When the village celebrates loudest: the first weekend of May, for the Gauderfest. It is the oldest spring festival in the Alps, and Zell is full – with one hotel in the village that means booking months ahead.

When it is quietest: in May and November, between the seasons. The paths are still or already empty, and so are the rates – and in May the falls in the national park carry the meltwater.

How long to stay: at least two nights, better a week. That matches the condition and the valley alike.

The suitespot benefits here work independently of any programme membership and of the rate you book – the 50 US dollar credit comes with no fine print.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

The Zillertal, hotel credit and exclusive services in a 5-star hotel

The Zillertal is the widest transverse valley in the Alps, and everything else follows from that. Because the valley floor is so broad the villages do not sit in shadow, and because the side valleys cut in so deeply you get from meadows to glaciers within a few kilometres of Zell.

Two routes are especially worth it. East over the Gerlos Pass into the Hohe Tauern national park, where the Krimml falls drop 385 metres in three stages – the highest in Europe, and you walk up alongside them. South up the valley past Mayrhofen to the Hintertux glacier, where people ski in August too.

In between runs the Zillertalbahn, since 1902, on 760 millimetre gauge – in summer a few times a week under steam, and that is not a museum attraction but a railway people actually use.

The hotel credit is meant for the evenings: 50 US dollars, with no rate condition and no additional requirement. In a village this size, where you eat at the hotel in the evening, that is the most easily redeemed benefit there is.

What our travel advisors arrange most often beyond that: the early check-in on the day of arrival – come in the morning from Munich or Innsbruck and you are at the lift by midday rather than four – and the ski pass, because the Zillertal Arena and the glacier have separate tariffs and the combination does not arrange itself.

And then there are the things that always come with it: the room upgrade subject to availability, the late check-out and breakfast for two – every day.
