This hotel asks for a minimum stay of two nights. That is not rare in the programme – around 580 hotels have the same rule – but here it means something: two nights are two evenings, and this hotel has a table for each. The first belongs to Le V, Alexandre Fabris’s starred restaurant. The second to the Bistrot under the plane trees. Anyone wanting only one night is in the wrong place; anyone booking two should spend them that way.
The second figure: this hotel’s ladder runs from 24 to 300 square metres. That is twelve and a half times over. And our recommended category, the Deluxe room, is the entry point at 24: with a view of mountain or pool.
The third: exactly four categories here expressly face the Alpilles. They are the Van Gogh Suite at 110 square metres and the three villas with first names – Aurélie, Léonie, Clémence, 130 each. Anyone who wants to see the limestone range Van Gogh painted books one of these four categories.
Our advice: Plan the two nights as two evenings, and book the window by the view. For the entry point the Deluxe will do; the upgrade on arrival then leads into the suite at 33 or 40. For the Alpilles, name one of the four categories to our travel advisors – and have the table at Le V reserved at the same time.
Where to stay in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: on the edge of the Alpilles, a kilometre from the centre
Le Vallon de Valrugues lies on Chemin Canto Cigalo at the eastern edge of Saint-Rémy, where the gardens give way to the garrigue – just under a kilometre from the centre, on the edge of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone taking Saint-Rémy as a base for the Alpilles: Les Baux, Glanum and the olive groves on one side, Avignon and Arles on the other – and the village on foot in the evening.
What lies within reach: Glanum, the Roman town with mausoleum and triumphal arch at the foot of the hills, a kilometre and a half; Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, the monastery where Van Gogh lived and painted in 1889 and 1890, on the same path; and Les Baux-de-Provence, the rock village with the castle ruin and the Carrières des Lumières, six kilometres over the pass.
For orientation: Avignon with its TGV station lies twenty kilometres north, Arles twenty-five to the south-west, Marseille airport an hour. The hotel shuttle runs to the centre; for the Alpilles one needs a car or good shoes.
