The Hôtel L’Imperator stands on Rue Gaston Boissier, at the edge of the old town – 200 metres from the Maison Carrée, 400 from the Jardins de la Fontaine, 700 from the arena, a good kilometre from the station, 19 from the Pont du Gard, 29 from Arles, 38 from Avignon and 46 from Montpellier.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants Provence without Provence prices – and for those arriving by TGV who intend to do the rest on foot.
What lies within reach: the Maison Carrée, the Roman temple of around 2 BC, 200 metres; the Jardins de la Fontaine with the Temple of Diana and the Tour Magne above, 400 metres; the arena of AD 70, seven hundred metres.
For orientation: the Pont du Gard, the Roman aqueduct over the Gardon, lies 19 kilometres north-east; Arles with its own arena 29; Avignon 38 and Montpellier 46. In Nîmes one walks; to the Camargue and the Pont du Gard one drives.
