Your guide to the best luxury hotel in York

York is ringed by a wall you can walk on – a good three kilometres, round in two hours. Inside it lies a city where Romans, Vikings and the Middle Ages sit on top of one another, and above it all stands the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. The Grand YorkThe Grand York · City Centre WestFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in York and picked one: a single luxury hotel – and one where something struck us as we went through the benefits.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

One luxury hotel in York – and who it suits

Our choice for York is The Grand at 148 € a night. It offers 24 categories – an unusually wide choice for a single hotel.

Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAsk via WhatsAppWrite an email

And then there is the benefit block.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

We go through the benefit block point by point on every page. At this house it is complete. Eight points, eight ticks – at The Grand The Grand:

• Breakfast for two, daily
• 100 US dollars hotel credit
• room upgrade subject to availability
• points and status benefits with I Prefer
• early check-in and late check-out – both, not just one
• a welcome gift
• every benefit from the first night

A house that brings them all is the exception in this selection.

Now the part that makes it practical: a night here costs 148 €, so the 100 US dollar credit covers a large part of it – a ratio you cannot get with a 500-euro room, because the amount there stays the same.

And the early check-in is worth more in York than elsewhere: trains from London take under two hours, so you arrive in the morning. A room at eleven instead of three is half a day in the city.

Our advice: take two nights and ask us about the early check-in. Over two nights you have the credit, two breakfasts and three usable days – for what a single night with nothing included costs in many cities.

Where to stay in York: on the city walls, beside the station

York is compact, and the hotel makes use of that. The Grand stands in the western part of the city centre, right against the city walls and a few minutes from the station.

The building is itself part of the city’s story: it was built in 1906 as the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway, then one of the largest railway companies in the country. York was a railway city, and this building was its head.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone arriving by train – which in York is the obvious way to come. From the door it is a few minutes up onto the wall, and from there a quarter of an hour on foot to the Minster.

What lies along that walk: the Shambles, the medieval lane where the upper floors almost touch across the street; the snickelways, as York calls its passages; Clifford’s Tower on its mound – and the National Railway Museum, which sits behind the station and is therefore just around the corner.

For orientation: the train from London King’s Cross takes under two hours, from Edinburgh two and a half. The North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales each begin about an hour away by car.

Rooms and suites: the best hotel in York from the inside

The Grand offers 24 categories, and five of them are suites. That is an unusually wide choice for a single hotel – and it is flatter than the number suggests.

Behind those 24 names sit only seven different floor areas. Ten categories alone measure exactly 40 square metres: the Family Room, six variants of the Executive Room and two Classic Room. Four more sit at 33.

So the name here does not tell you how large the room is, but which floor it is on and which way it faces. If you are looking for square metres, ask for the figure, not for the word.

At the top the ladder looks like this: Penthouse View and Penthouse Skyline View at 64 square metres each, then the Larger Feature Suite and the Grand Heritage Suite at 60 each, the Feature Suite at 51 and the Heritage Suite at 46.

Which brings up something worth noticing: the two largest units in the hotel are not suites. The two Penthouse categories, at 64 square metres, sit above the largest suite. So if you want the biggest floor plan here, you should specifically not ask for a suite – ask for the penthouse.

Tell our travel advisors whether floor area, floor level or outlook matters more to you. With 24 categories and seven sizes that is the only question that really sorts the list.

What a night in a luxury hotel in York costs

A night in a luxury hotel in York costs 148 €.

The Grand York148 €1st night

The benefits apply from the first night. For a city many people do as a day trip from London, that is the argument for staying after all.

When it is at its best: from May to September. The evenings are long then, the city walls are comfortable to walk, and the Museum Gardens are open.

When York is most itself: in November and December. The Christmas market fills the lanes around Parliament Street, it gets dark early, and a city of stone strung with lights looks the way it is meant to.

When it is quietest: in January and February. The Minster is almost yours alone, the Shambles can be walked rather than queued through – and the rates are the lowest of the year.

When to book early: in December, over Easter, and on race days at the Knavesmire, the course south of the city. With one hotel York fills up instantly.

How long to stay: two nights. One for the Minster, the wall and the Shambles – and one for the Railway Museum, the Jorvik centre or a day in the Dales.

You earn points and status benefits with I Prefer.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

The Minster, hotel credit and exclusive services in a 5-star hotel

York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, and it has something no other has: the Great East Window, the largest surviving expanse of medieval glass in the world, made between 1405 and 1408. Climb the tower – 275 steps – and you see from above how small the old town inside its wall actually is.

Beneath the city lies the next layer. York was Roman Eboracum and then Viking Jorvik; the Jorvik centre holds the Coppergate excavations, and in the Minster’s undercroft you can see the Roman foundations it stands on.

The hotel credit is meant for the evenings after that: 100 US dollars, with no rate condition and no additional requirement. In a city with a 148-euro room rate that is an item that stands out in proportion – and York has enough seventeenth-century pubs to spend it sensibly.

What our travel advisors arrange most often beyond that: the early check-in, because the trains from London arrive in the morning and a room at eleven is half a day gained – and the dinner reservation, because in a city this size the good addresses are gone weeks ahead at weekends.

And then there are the things that always come with it: the room upgrade subject to availability, the late check-out, the welcome gift and breakfast for two – every day, from the first night.
