Hotel Elephant Weimar · ZentrumFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Weimar and chose one: a luxury hotel that is precisely this hotel – with thirty categories and three suites named after their guests. What that means for booking is below. Our choice for Weimar is the Hotel Elephant Weimar at Markt 19, opposite the town hall. In our ranking it stands at 4.8 out of 5, and a night starts at 135 euros. The hotel takes part in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty programme.
Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel in which Weimar has housed its history: founded in 1696 as an inn on the market square, a post station from 1741, Goethe celebrated his 80th birthday here, Schiller his premieres, Thomas Mann set “Lotte in Weimar” here, and for the founding of the Bauhaus Gropius, Feininger and Schlemmer slept at the Elephant. Since its 2018 reopening after nine months of rebuilding it belongs to the Autograph Collection: 93 rooms and six suites, the restaurant AnnA with Thuringian cooking and the Lichtsaal, where the hotel gives concerts and readings. Our recommended category is called Grand Deluxe.
This hotel has thirty categories, three suites with names – and starts at 135 euros.
The selection: thirty categories. Classic, Deluxe and Grand Deluxe each appear seven times; plus an Urban room and five further suites.
And then the three suites that are the hotel: the Gropius Suite, the Thomas Mann Suite and the Lyonel Feininger Suite – named after the guests who slept here when the Bauhaus was founded and when “Lotte in Weimar” was written. The Feininger Suite also looks onto the garden.
Our recommended category is called Grand Deluxe – the third of three room levels. What sets it apart from Deluxe, our travel advisors will explain.
And the price: 135 euros for 4.8 out of 5. For a hotel with this guest list that is the real news.
Our advice: Book the suite by name, not the room by level. With an entry price of 135 euros the way into one of the three suites is shorter than elsewhere the way from Deluxe to Grand Deluxe – and you sleep in a suite that has a story. Anyone wanting the room takes Grand Deluxe as recommended and asks our travel advisors for the area; the upgrade on arrival leads from there into a suite.
The Hotel Elephant Weimar stands at Markt 19, opposite the town hall, in the middle of the old town – two hundred metres from Goethe’s residence on the Frauenplan, one kilometre from the Bauhaus Museum, one and a half from the main station.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone taking Weimar on foot – and that is the only way to take Weimar: everything that makes the city famous lies within fifteen minutes.
What lies within reach: Goethe’s residence on the Frauenplan, with the study where Faust was finished, three minutes; the Bauhaus Museum of 2019 with the oldest Bauhaus collection in the world, a quarter of an hour; and the Park on the Ilm with Goethe’s Gartenhaus, five minutes down the slope.
For orientation: the main station is twenty minutes on foot to the north; the train to Erfurt with its ICE station takes a quarter of an hour, to Berlin a good two hours. Buchenwald lies ten kilometres outside, by bus. The car stays in the garage; the old town is pedestrianised.
The Hotel Elephant Weimar offers thirty categories, nine of them suites. They fall into a few families.
The rooms: Classic, Deluxe and Grand Deluxe – our recommended category –, each in seven variants, plus the Urban room.
The suites: five without a name and three with: Gropius, Thomas Mann and Lyonel Feininger, the last with garden view.
On the view: this hotel’s motif is the market square with the town hall. The Feininger Suite looks onto the garden.
What applies equally to every category: breakfast for two, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability, Marriott Bonvoy points and status and a welcome gift.
A night at the luxury hotel in Weimar starts at 135 euros.
There is expressly no minimum stay: a single night can be booked. Included are: breakfast for two, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability, regular Marriott Bonvoy points and status benefits, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability and a welcome gift.
When it is loveliest: in May and June, when the Park on the Ilm is green and one walks from Goethe’s Gartenhaus to the palace, and in September for the Kunstfest, when the city puts its stages outdoors.
What belongs to Weimar: the Onion Market on the second weekend of October, the oldest folk festival in Thuringia, when 300,000 people come to a city of 65,000, and the Christmas market at the hotel’s door. That is not a warning but the calendar: on those days the hotel is the centre of the market.
When to ask early: for the Onion Market, the Kunstfest and Advent – and for the three named suites on any date.
How long to stay: two nights for Goethe, Schiller and the Bauhaus – three if Buchenwald and Erfurt are added.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
Thuringia is the green heart of Germany, the tourist board says, and Weimar is the place where the country keeps its culture: no other city of this size holds eleven World Heritage sites – the Classical period and the Bauhaus – and, ten kilometres outside, a place that shows where all of it could also lead.

First Goethe’s residence on the Frauenplan: the rooms as he left them in 1832, with the collection, the library and the room where he died. Second the Bauhaus Museum: the concrete cube of 2019 with Gropius’s collection, which the city did not want in 1925 and shows today. Third Buchenwald: the memorial on the Ettersberg that belongs to every visit to Weimar, because it belongs.
The package at this hotel is breakfast, upgrade, points and gift.
What our travel advisors arrange most often: the suite by name, for the reason stated above, tickets for the National Theatre opposite Goethe and Schiller in bronze, and the table at AnnA – because Thuringian cooking begins in Weimar.
