Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp · TheaterbuurtThe luxury hotels in Antwerp are few, but each has a character of its own. For food lovers and spa days we recommend the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp, in a former monastery by the Botanical Garden, with two Michelin Keys, an 18-meter pool and the two-star restaurant Hertog Jan. Couples who like it small and personal stay at De Witte Lelie Antwerp: eleven rooms and suites behind the pink door of three listed townhouses.A new chapter was written by the Sapphire House Antwerp: since May 2022 the city palace next to the Handelsbeurs has been a hotel, Marriott’s first in Antwerp and part of the Autograph Collection. You stay in rooms named Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Diamond, among preserved staircases, 18th-century fireplaces and rococo ornaments, and have breakfast overlooking one of the two inner courtyards.
Sapphire House Antwerp · Old TownAt the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp, a four-year restoration of the monastery complex came to an end in 2024, crowned by the Botanic Suite: 94 m² of living space plus a 68 m² rooftop terrace. New in the kitchen is Yves Mattagne, who cooks at Sanctus and Hidden Garden; afternoon tea is in the hands of Roger van Damme.
De Witte Lelie Antwerp has expressive interiors: Antwerp designer Ann Dierick (Animalick) styled its eleven rooms and suites, right up to the Presidential Suite. Our travel advisors will gladly tell you which category is available for your dates.
Swimming in a monastery: Among the luxury hotels in Antwerp, only the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp has a pool. The Botanic Health Spa spreads over three floors and 1,000 m², with an 18-meter panoramic pool, a relaxation gallery with cocooning nooks, saunas and steam baths, a thermal area, an ice fountain and botanical showers. Ten treatment rooms, two of them for couples, use Saint Charles natural products; children up to 16 may join a parent in the spa at set times.
De Witte Lelie AntwerpIn the old town: The Sapphire House Antwerp has no spa but a fitness room, and your pet is welcome too. At De Witte Lelie Antwerp the garden courtyard takes the place of a spa: in summer the Lilium restaurant serves there.
Two stars in the cloister: At the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp, Gert De Mangeleer serves a Japanese-inspired omakase menu at Hertog Jan at Botanic, with West Flemish produce from the hotel’s gardens, greenhouse and beehives; the Michelin Guide awards it two stars. Fine Fleur by Jacob Jan Boerma and Thomas Diepersloot holds one star, open Wednesday to Saturday, with views into the kitchen.
More tables in the monastery: If you are planning a special evening at a 5-star hotel in Antwerp, reserve at Sanctus, where Yves Mattagne and Charles Broutard serve a monthly changing menu from Tuesday to Friday. The brasserie Bar Bulot, run by the Hertog Jan team, focuses on seafood and meat, and at Henry's Bar, named after a 19th-century director of the Botanical Garden, you sit indoors or out.
A table for the few: At De Witte Lelie Antwerp, Jo Bussels cooks at Lilium for just seven tables, with an open kitchen, a seasonal menu and wines from small European producers; Gault&Millau gives it 14 out of 20. It is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Friday. From Thursday to Saturday, from 6pm, the speakeasy The Bronze Bar pours cocktails with house-made cordials.
A bistro in a city palace: At the Sapphire House Antwerp you eat seasonally at Sapphire Bistro, from breakfast to dinner, with its own bar; the fully plant-based concept of the opening years is gone. In summer the Sapphire Patio by Scapa Home opens in the courtyard with refined bites and bistro classics.
Hertog Jan opens Tuesday to Saturday for about two weeks a month and takes a break in August, and Sanctus accepts reservations up to three months ahead. For a spontaneous meal, Hidden Garden at the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp is open seven days a week. Our travel advisors will gladly match your room and your table.
The history of the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp reaches back furthest: some buildings of the former monastery by the Botanical Garden date from around 1400. The monastery kitchens are dining rooms today, the 15th-century chapel hosts weddings and celebrations, and the 19th-century pharmacy that once made remedies for the Sint-Elisabeth hospital is again home to the Saint Charles Apothecary.
Three townhouses on Keizerstraat make up De Witte Lelie Antwerp: 't Leliken, first mentioned in 1497, De Zwarte Arend, joined to it by Peter Coenraets between 1611 and 1617, and Het Wapen van Spanje, added in 1947. The houses have been listed since 1984 and a hotel since 1992.
At no extra cost: you pay the same rate as booking direct with the hotel – the suitespot benefits come on top, free of charge.
The Sapphire House Antwerp combines three historic buildings next to the Handelsbeurs, the site of the world’s first stock exchange. In the 16th century the main house was called “Den Grooten Robijn”, the Great Ruby; it gained its rococo decoration in the 18th century and later served as a bank headquarters.
