History on the Water: the Luxury Hotels in Kenmare from 1790 to Today – and Four Michelin Keys
In 1790, William Petty Fitzmaurice, 2nd Earl of Shelburne, had his townhouse built here; today it is The Lansdowne Kenmare. From 1972 to 2000, the Hanley family ran it as The Lansdowne Arms Hotel.
In the 17th century, the land of Sheen Falls Lodge was part of Sir William Petty's Kerry estate. The 1st Earl of Kerry built Sheen Cottage here as a base for hunting and fishing; in 1854 a fishing lodge replaced it, later used by the Lansdowne family. The Danish Hoyer family bought the estate in 1988 and opened the hotel in 1991.
Park Hotel Kenmare was built in 1897 as a railway hotel for travelers to southwest Ireland and has kept its Victorian character. Its current owners, Bryan and Tara Meehan, have brought a significant private collection of contemporary art into the house, with works by Sean Scully and others.
