Luxury Hotels in Cork with History: a Templar Castle, a Merchant Estate and a Michelin Key
The castle that gave the village of Castlemartyr its name was originally built by the Knights Templar in 1210; its ruins stand on the grounds of Castlemartyr Resort today. Later, the land belonged to Sir Walter Raleigh and to Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork, under whom the manor house was built. Restored, it opened in 2008 as the centerpiece of the resort.
Hayfield Manor stands on an estate that once belonged to the Musgrave merchant family. The Scally family bought it, opened the hotel in 1996 and still own and run it today.
A hotel had operated on Western Road for around 40 years, most recently as the Jurys Hotel, before the Irish Doyle Collection redeveloped the building for 38 million euros; in March 2010 it reopened as The River Lee Cork. The Montenotte Hotel grew out of a residence called Lee View House, which was extended over the years into an urban resort on the hill.
