Why we recommend it: Because it has the slope that matters: the hotel sits between the harbour and the Chora, and from the terraces one sees the bay without standing in it. Every unit is a suite, and all but one look out to sea; six of them share a pool of their own. Dinner is at Grandma’s, which carried the Toques d’Or distinction in the Modern Cuisine category from 2019 to 2024; add a spa and a pool with a bar. The Chora is four hundred metres uphill, the harbour six hundred down. Our recommended category is called Design Sea View Suite.

What makes this list special: there is not a single room, only suites – here the category that is the third step elsewhere begins at the first. And only one of the eight categories looks not at the sea but into the garden.
The recommendation comes with an ambiguity: Design Sea View Suite is what our category is called, and the list holds two Design Suites – one at 30 and one at 40 square metres, both with a sea view. Anyone who wants the ten extra square metres for certain gives our travel advisors the number.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone arriving by ferry who would rather not roll the suitcase far – and for those who prefer to reach the Chora on foot rather than by scooter.
What lies within reach: the Chora with its white lanes, the windmills and the Panagia Gremiotissa above the village, four hundred metres; the harbour of Gialos with the ferries and the tavernas by the water, six hundred; Mylopotas beach, the longest on the island, just under two kilometres.
For orientation: Santorini lies 37 kilometres south and is reached by ferry in a good hour, Naxos 43 kilometres north. Ios has no airport – one arrives via Santorini, Naxos or Mykonos and then by boat. On the island one rides a scooter or takes the bus.
