Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel with which Pontresina entered the Belle Époque in 1907: built as the “Palace”, opened on 17 June 1907, designed by the Zurich architect Arnold Huber in the Heimatstil with Art Nouveau elements – a building with turrets and oriels that has followed the same idea for over a hundred years. Today it belongs to Relais & Châteaux, has an indoor pool and spa and the Clubhütte, the replica of a mountain hut in the cellar where the Engadine’s first Pilsner was tapped in 1917. Our recommended category is called Double Superior.

In this hotel the name says nothing and the number says everything – three names appear twice, at double the size.
Ten categories, from 17 to 62 square metres. And three times the same name comes in two sizes: Standard at 17 and at 29 square metres, Superior at 20 and at 37, Deluxe at 22 and at 39. Each time the second one is almost twice the size of the first. Anyone booking “a Superior” has not yet said anything.
That applies to our recommended category too: Double Superior exists at 20 and at 37 square metres. So the recommendation is a name, not a size.
Two more figures that belong to the hotel. First: the ladder starts at 17 square metres – in a palace of 1907 that is not a mistake but the period. Second: this hotel’s package includes three benefits – breakfast, upgrade on arrival, welcome gift. That is a slim package, and it is honest: this hotel sells mountains.
Our advice: Book by square metres, not by name. Tell our travel advisors “Superior at 37” or “Deluxe at 39 with mountain view” – not “Superior”. The upgrade on arrival is one rung on a ladder of ten here; anyone entering at 17 may land at 20. Anyone wanting the Bernina range from the window takes one of the four categories with mountain view: 17, 20, 39 or the suite at 43.
Where to stay in Pontresina: on the Via Maistra, facing the Bernina range
The Walther Hotel Pontresina stands on the Via Maistra, Pontresina’s village street, at 1,800 metres – the Rhaetian Railway station just under a kilometre below, St. Moritz five and a half kilometres away along the valley road.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone taking the Engadine as mountains rather than as society: walkers, skiers, cross-country skiers – and anyone wanting to see St. Moritz without sleeping there.
What lies within reach: the Val Roseg, the car-free side valley with the glacier at its end, on foot or by horse-drawn carriage from the station; the Diavolezza, the cable car to 3,000 metres opposite the Piz Palü, ten kilometres up the valley; and the Morteratsch glacier, reached by a path with markers showing where the ice stood in which year.
For orientation: Zurich airport is three hours away by rail, via Chur and the Albula; the Bernina Express runs from Pontresina over the pass to Tirano. In the village one walks or takes the local bus; a car is not needed in the Engadine.
