The Historic Cavalier Hotel Virginia Beach · Virginia BeachFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Virginia Beach and chose one: a luxury hotel of 1927 on the hill above the beach, where history counts for more than any square metre. What that means for booking is below. Our choice for Virginia Beach is The Historic Cavalier Hotel Virginia Beach at 4200 Atlantic Avenue, on the hill at the north end of the boardwalk. In our ranking it stands at 4.1 out of 5, and a night starts at 155 euros. The hotel belongs to Marriott Bonvoy.
Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel with which Virginia Beach became a resort in 1927: the brick building in the style of the Roaring Twenties, with columns modelled on Jefferson’s Monticello and a lawn like the one at the University of Virginia – on the National Register of Historic Places, reopened in 2018 after an 85-million-dollar restoration, with 85 rooms, 23 of them suites, where once there were 195. In the basement Tarnished Truth distils bourbon and gin – one of the few distilleries inside a hotel –, in the garden Becca cooks, and the Beach Club with pools and beach lies across the avenue on the water. Our recommended category is called King Deluxe.
Eight categories in a hotel where the year it was built counts for more than size and view.
The choice: two Rooms, two Deluxe, a Suite, the Heritage Suite, the Hospitality Suite and the Presidential Suite.
That means: our recommended King Deluxe is the second step of four room categories – above the Room, below the suites. The hotel itself says: 85 rooms in a building of 1927, in which the rooms were cut larger after the restoration than the 195 of old. Anyone wanting the Atlantic from the window asks our travel advisors for the ocean side.
Then the package: breakfast, upgrade on arrival, Bonvoy points, early check-in and late check-out, a welcome gift – and a single night can be booked. That is the standard package at full length.
Our advice: Book the King Deluxe and let the upgrade bring the Heritage Suite. With 85 rooms and 23 suites the share of suites here is unusually high – the upgrade on arrival has correspondingly many addresses. And leave the evening to the hotel: the distillery runs tours, and Becca is the reason the city eats here.
The Historic Cavalier Hotel Virginia Beach stands at 4200 Atlantic Avenue at the north end of Virginia Beach, on the hill above the road to the beach – two kilometres from the boardwalk and the Neptune, eight from First Landing State Park, twenty from Norfolk airport and 27 from Norfolk itself.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting the Atlantic on the American East Coast without sleeping in a tower – and for anyone who prefers a hotel with history to a hotel with a location.
What lies within reach: the hotel’s Beach Club with the pools and the stretch of beach, across the avenue; the boardwalk with the Neptune statue, the Ferris wheel and the three miles of promenade, ten minutes by bike; and First Landing State Park, where the Jamestown settlers first came ashore in 1607, with cypress swamps and dunes, a quarter of an hour.
For orientation: Norfolk airport is half an hour away, Norfolk with the naval base and the Chrysler Museum likewise, Williamsburg and the colonial capital an hour and a half. In Virginia Beach one drives; a bike will do for boardwalk and beach.
The Historic Cavalier Hotel Virginia Beach offers eight categories, four of them suites.
The rooms: two Rooms and two Deluxe – among them our recommended King Deluxe.
The suites: the Suite, the Heritage Suite, the Hospitality Suite and the Presidential Suite.
The Atlantic lies across the avenue; our travel advisors will tell you which rooms see it.
What applies equally to every category: breakfast for two, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability, Marriott Bonvoy points, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability and a welcome gift.
A night at the luxury hotel in Virginia Beach starts at 155 euros.
There is expressly no minimum stay: a single night can be booked. Included are: breakfast for two, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability, Marriott Bonvoy points, early check-in and late check-out and a welcome gift.
When it is loveliest: from May to September, when the Atlantic is above 20 degrees and the Beach Club is open – and at the end of September for the Neptune Festival, when sand sculptures are built on the beach.
What belongs to the East Coast: the winter. From December to March the boardwalk is empty, the wind comes off the sea, and the city belongs to the locals. That is not a warning but the calendar: anyone coming then has the hotel with its bar, its distillery and its fireplace – and the lowest price of the year.
When to ask early: for the Fourth of July, on summer weekends and for the Neptune Festival – and for the Presidential Suite in any case.
How long to stay: two nights for beach, boardwalk and distillery – three if Williamsburg is added.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
Hampton Roads is the region at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay where the United States began: Jamestown 1607, Williamsburg as colonial capital, Yorktown as the end of the War of Independence – and Norfolk as the largest naval base in the world. Virginia Beach is its beach.

Second the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel: 17 miles over and under the bay to the Eastern Shore, one of the longest bridge-tunnel crossings in the world, at the north end of the city. Third Back Bay: the wildlife refuge to the south with the dunes and the wild horses of False Cape beyond.
The package at this hotel is breakfast, upgrade, points, check-in and check-out and gift.
What our travel advisors arrange most often: the question of the ocean side, for the reason stated above, the table at Becca and the distillery tour – because the hotel’s bourbon tastes best in the hotel.
