Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik grew out of Villa Odak, built in 1913 as a royal villa and a hotel since July 1913; the modern wing, The Tower, came later. Its guests have included Queen Elizabeth II and Elizabeth Taylor, remembered in a small Gallery of Fame in the house.
Villa Dubrovnik goes back to a 1961 design by architect Mladen Frka. From 1963 the building served as an annex of Hotel Argentina, and by 1970 it had become a small hotel of about 30 rooms. Boris Fiolić and Mira Tadej turned it into a design hotel in 2003. It was closed for renovation from 2006 to 2010, and in winter 2023/24 it was renewed from top to bottom once more.
