Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel that built the Riviera before tourism did: a 1903 palazzo with a trompe-l’œil façade, owned by the Fustinoni family since 1945, with 72 rooms and suites, the Vistamare restaurant serving Ligurian cooking on the terrace and an outdoor seawater pool in the garden above the gulf. It belongs to the Leading Hotels of the World, and the minibar with non-alcoholic drinks is complimentary – a rare benefit. Our recommended category is called Park View with Balcony.

Nineteen categories: six are called Park View – that is the back, towards the wooded hillside –, eleven Sea View or Ocean View, plus two with a balcony. Our recommended category, Park View with Balcony, belongs to the first group: 20 to 24 square metres, looking at the hill.
That is not a bad room. But it is not what one pays 470 euros on the Riviera for. The sea side starts at 22 square metres in the Deluxe Sea View with balcony and at 24 in the Prestige Sea View – almost the same size, a different direction. And from 41 square metres upwards, all seven Signature suites face the sea as Ocean View, up to the Signature Miramare at 64.
One more figure worth knowing: the whole ladder of nineteen steps lies between 20 and 64 square metres. That is 44 square metres across nineteen steps – the difference between two categories here is often a window, not a room.
Our advice: Book the sea side by name, not the recommendation. Deluxe Sea View with balcony or Prestige Sea View if it is to be a room; a Signature suite if the sea may be in the name. And tell our travel advisors that the upgrade on arrival should stay on the sea side – upwards, not backwards.
Where to stay in Santa Margherita Ligure: on the waterfront road, three kilometres before Portofino
The Grand Hotel Miramare stands on Via Milite Ignoto, the waterfront road that leads from Santa Margherita to Portofino – with the garden towards the Gulf of Tigullio and the hillside behind. The railway station is a good kilometre away, Portofino just under three.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants to see Portofino every day without sleeping there: the village in the morning before the day visitors, the way back on foot along the coastal path, dinner again in Santa Margherita.
What lies within reach: Portofino with the Piazzetta and Castello Brown, three kilometres along the coast – an hour on foot, twenty minutes by boat; the Abbey of San Fruttuoso, reachable only by boat or footpath, in a cove between Portofino and Camogli; and the Cinque Terre, an hour by train.
For orientation: Genoa airport is just under an hour away, Milan two and a half hours by rail. The road to Portofino is narrow and full in summer; those who avoid it take the boat from the harbour.
