Why we recommend it: Because it is the building with which Hvar became a resort: on the site of a 13th-century duke’s palace stood, from 1899, the Spa Hotel Empress Elisabeth – named after Sisi, who sponsored its construction –, and since the 2019 restoration it is again what it was: Venetian stonework left on show, hand-painted murals of Hvar motifs in the rooms, the San Marco restaurant with its terrace to the bay, an indoor pool and a spa. Where to stay in Hvar: on the main square, above the town hall, facing the harbour
The Palace Elisabeth Hvar Heritage Hotel stands on Trg svetog Stjepana, the main square of Hvar town – above the town hall, between arsenal and cathedral, with the harbour and the Riva at the door. The Fortica fortress is ten minutes uphill, the Stari Grad ferry port eleven kilometres away.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone taking Hvar as a town – square, Riva, dinner in the lanes – and the sea by boat: to the Pakleni Islands, reached from the harbour in ten minutes.
What lies within reach: the Fortica, the Spanish fortress above the town, with the view of harbour and islands that every postcard shows; the Arsenal with the theatre of 1612 upstairs, right on the square; and the Pakleni Islands with Palmižana and the coves, by water taxi from the harbour.
For orientation: the catamaran from Split docks directly in the harbour, one hour; the car ferry arrives at Stari Grad, twenty minutes by bus. Split airport is on the mainland; from there catamaran or ferry. No car drives in the old town; luggage comes on foot or by cart.
