What is within reach: the Caffè degli Specchi on the same square and the Caffè San Marco ten minutes on, both cafés in the true Viennese sense for over a century; the Molo Audace, the pier running 250 metres out to sea from the piazza; and the hill of San Giusto with cathedral and castle above the old town.
For orientation: Miramare Castle lies a quarter of an hour north along the water, the railway station ten minutes on foot, Trieste airport a good half hour. Ljubljana is an hour and a half away, Venice two.
