Hotel Des Indes The Hague · VoorhoutFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in The Hague and picked one: a single luxury hotel on exactly this avenue – with rooms from 16 square metres. What that means for booking is explained below. Our choice for The Hague is the Hotel Des Indes on Lange Voorhout. It sits at 4.7 out of 5 in our ranking, and a night starts at 181 euros. The hotel takes part in the Leaders Club loyalty programme.
Why we recommend it: Because it is the building that built the avenue: erected in 1858 as a city palace for Baron van Brienen, a hotel since 1881 – named after the Hotel des Indes in Batavia –, today 92 rooms and suites and a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. The high tea in the lounge is a Hague institution, the Des Indes Restaurant the address for the evening. Our recommended category is the Executive.
The bottom rung of this hotel measures 16 square metres – and the upgrade stops below the suites.
Seven categories: 16 in the Classic, 21 to 30 in the Superior, 30 in the Executive, 29 to 35 in the Deluxe, 30 to 41 in the second Executive, 38 to 54 in the Suite and 73 in the Presidential Suite. 16 square metres in a palace of 1858 is no surprise.
What makes this destination special is the rule attached: the upgrade on arrival expressly excludes the two suites. Which means: anyone booking Classic can get as far as the 41 – and the step from 16 to the Superior is the largest relative gain on that ladder. But it is a hope, not a plan.
Add a figure that has to be read: the hotel credit here is 75 euros – for food and drink, excluding room service.
Our advice: don't book the 16 and hope; book the Superior and take the upgrade as a bonus. Our recommended category, Executive, comes in two sizes – 30 and 30 to 41 –; tell our travel advisors which you mean. And anyone wanting the suite books the suite – that is the direct way.
The Hotel Des Indes stands on Lange Voorhout, the avenue in the centre lined with palaces, embassies and the Escher museum – between the Binnenhof with the parliament and the Noordeinde royal palace, both a few minutes on foot.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who takes The Hague as a city – museums, government, art – and the North Sea as an outing, not the other way round.
What is within reach: the Mauritshuis with Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, five minutes; the Binnenhof, seat of politics since the 13th century, just as close; and the Kunstmuseum with the largest Mondrian collection in the world, a quarter of an hour by tram.
For orientation: Den Haag Centraal station is ten minutes on foot to the east; the train to Amsterdam takes fifty minutes, to Rotterdam half an hour. Scheveningen with beach and pier is a quarter of an hour by tram, Rotterdam The Hague airport half an hour, Schiphol forty minutes.
The Hotel Des Indes carries seven categories, two suites among them.
The ladder: 16 square metres in the Classic, 21 to 30 in the Superior and 30 in the first Executive, 29 to 35 in the Deluxe, 30 to 41 in the second Executive, 38 to 54 in the Suite, 73 in the Presidential Suite. That there are two categories named Executive is a point to spell out when booking.
On the outlook: the lime trees of Lange Voorhout stand right in front of the hotel – ask for the avenue side explicitly.
What applies to every category alike: breakfast for two people, the 75 euro hotel credit for food and drink and the upgrade on arrival subject to availability – in every category except the two suites, for which it is excluded.
A night at the luxury hotel in The Hague starts at 181 euros.
There is no minimum stay: a single night is bookable. Included are: breakfast for two people, a 75 euro hotel credit for food and drink (excluding room service), an upgrade on arrival subject to availability – the two suites excepted –, and early check-in and late check-out subject to availability.
When it is at its best: in May and June and in September. The lime trees are green, the terraces on the Voorhout are full, and Scheveningen is a beach without being high season.
When The Hague celebrates: on the third Tuesday in September, Prinsjesdag, when the king rides in the golden coach to parliament – the route passes along Lange Voorhout, and the hotel stands on it.
What belongs to The Hague: the wind. The North Sea is ten minutes away, and from November to March you feel it in the city; that is not a warning but the reason there is high tea here.
When to enquire early: for Prinsjesdag and for summer weekends, when Scheveningen fills the city.
How long to stay: two nights for museums and Binnenhof – or three if Delft and the North Sea are added.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
The Netherlands has Amsterdam as its capital and The Hague as the seat of everything that governs and judges: government, parliament, crown, International Court of Justice, Peace Palace. It is the city of diplomats – and the only large city in the country with a beach at its door.
Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comThree things belong to it. First the Mauritshuis: small, on the Hofvijver, with Vermeer, Rembrandt and Fabritius's Goldfinch – the museum you see in an hour and do not forget. Second Delft: Vermeer's town, a quarter of an hour by train, with the market, the New Church and the canals. Third Scheveningen: the beach, the pier, the Kurhaus – the city goes to the sea on Sundays.
For everything else there is the hotel credit: 75 euros for food and drink – and the obvious use in this hotel is the high tea.
What our travel advisors arrange most often: the time slots at the Mauritshuis, because the museum is small and the tickets are gone beforehand, and the high tea itself, because it is reserved for hotel guests too.
And for members of the Leaders Club: our benefits come on top of the programme's, they do not replace them. Give us your membership number when you enquire.
