Your Guide to the Best Luxury Hotels in Montalcino

From its hilltop above the Val d’Orcia, Montalcino looks out over vineyards, olive groves and woodland. The Sangiovese from these slopes becomes Brunello; at harvest time in the fall, the cellars smell of fresh must. By day, gravel roads lead from estate to estate, and in the evening the enoteche up around the Fortezza fill for aperitivo. If you are looking for a 5-star hotel in Montalcino, you will stay not in the town but on one of the estates in the surrounding hills.Rosewood Castiglion del BoscoRosewood Castiglion del Bosco · TuscanyWhich of the best hotels suits you depends on your plans, because the three luxury hotels in Montalcino play to very different strengths. Families are well looked after at the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, with a kids’ club, babysitting, an 18-hole golf course and eleven villas with their own pool. Wine lovers stay at the Castello Banfi Il Borgo, with just 14 rooms among the vines and a tasting and winery tour included in the stay. And to switch off, soak at the Castello di Velona Resort in 36 °C water from its own thermal spring, outdoors even around the clock.

Brunello on the doorstep: Montalcino’s luxury hotels on their own wine estates

At the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, the Brunello comes from the very estate you stay on: 5,000 acres, around 2,000 hectares, in the Val d’Orcia UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a winery that is one of the 25 founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello. The two-Michelin-star restaurant Campo del Drago shares its name with the estate’s single-cru Brunello, and if you’d like to get behind the stove yourself, La Canonica, the estate’s cooking school, teaches with produce from the organic kitchen garden.

Castello Banfi Il BorgoCastello Banfi Il Borgo · Poggio alle Mura

At the Castello Banfi Il Borgo you sleep in the middle of the Banfi estate’s Brunello vineyards, right by the castle of Poggio alle Mura. The L’Enoteca wine bar pours every Banfi wine daily from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., along with grappa and olive oil, and pecorino and prosciutto come to the table for tastings. Book through suitespot and a two-course lunch paired with Castello Banfi wine is added, plus a chilled bottle of Banfi Cuvée Aurora Rosé on arrival.

Castello di Velona ResortCastello di Velona Resort · Montalcino

From the hilltop of the Castello di Velona Resort near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, you look across the Brunello vineyards into the Val d’Orcia. This estate also makes its own Brunello, and at the Settimo Senso restaurant it features on a wine list focused on Montalcino – take your glass out to the terrace above the valley.

The wine tasting is already booked

If Brunello is the main reason for your trip to Montalcino, the Castello Banfi Il Borgo is the easiest choice: a tasting and a tour of the winery are included in your stay, and suitespot adds the lunch with Banfi wine. That leaves the afternoon free for a second estate – such as the one at the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco. Our travel advisors will be happy to time the appointments around your arrival.

Pools

These luxury hotels in Montalcino have a pool – one even has its own thermal spring

You can swim at all three hotels, and each one has its own setting for it.

Pool – Castello di Velona ResortCastello di Velona Resort · Pool

The Castello di Velona Resort has the most unusual: a natural thermal spring on the estate. It feeds OLISPA, a thermal spa of more than 1,500 m² in travertine, with two indoor pools you can swim through into two outdoor pools – the water is 36 °C, and the outdoor pools overlooking the Val d’Orcia are open around the clock. Add to that a saltwater pool, waterfalls, a panoramic sauna, two steam rooms, experience showers, an ice cascade and treatment rooms, one of them for couples; the spa itself is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Selected suites have a private thermal pool on their panoramic terrace.

Pool – Rosewood Castiglion del BoscoRosewood Castiglion del Bosco · Pool

Prefer a pool of your own at your 5-star hotel in Montalcino? Book a villa. At the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, the heated Borgo Infinity Pool, 10 by 20 meters, lies next to a lavender field with views of Montalcino and the Val d’Orcia. In the upper borgo, the heated Borgo Silent Pool is set aside for quiet, and each of the eleven villas has its own saltwater pool in Tibetan stone at 28 °C. The spa uses products from a historic Florentine apothecary; signature rituals include the Tuscan Botanical Renewal with an olive oil scrub and massage. A sauna and steam room are included, and treatments are also available in your suite or villa.

At the Castello Banfi Il Borgo, the heated outdoor pool sits above the Sangiovese vines of the Poggio alle Mura cru; it is open seasonally. The small hotel has no spa, but it does have a gym – just like the other two.

Warm water when it’s cool outside

The outdoor pools at the Castello di Velona Resort are filled with 36 °C thermal water and open around the clock. That makes autumn and winter evenings here special: you swim in warm water while the stars come out over the Val d’Orcia. From 500 €, it is also the most affordable way into Montalcino.

Dining

Dining in Montalcino’s luxury hotels: two Michelin-starred restaurants, trattorias and Brunello in the glass

Two of the three hotels have a Michelin-starred restaurant. Two Michelin stars go to Campo del Drago at the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco – the first since 2023, the second since 2025. Executive Chef Matteo Temperini cooks creative Tuscan cuisine with produce from the estate’s organic garden; the terrace in the borgo looks out over Montalcino and the Val d’Orcia. It serves dinner, Tuesday to Saturday.

One star goes to La Sala dei Grappoli at the Castello Banfi Il Borgo. Domenico Francone cooks modern Italian-Mediterranean cuisine in three tasting menus focused on terroir and vegetables, paired with Banfi wines. The chef comes from Apulia and adds touches of home, such as taralli and panzerotti; inside, frescoes show wine motifs, and outside the terrace lies in the shade of the castello.

Dining – Rosewood Castiglion del BoscoRosewood Castiglion del Bosco · Dining

Away from the stars, the luxury hotels in Montalcino cook Tuscan. Osteria La Canonica at the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco occupies the former parish house by the church of San Michele, with a shady veranda, pasta, Chianina steaks and wood-fired pizza. At La Taverna at the Castello Banfi Il Borgo you sit under the vaults of the castle’s former barrel cellars, over classic dishes from Montalcino and Tuscany; at lunchtime day guests come too.

Dining – Castello Banfi Il BorgoCastello Banfi Il Borgo · Dining

At the Castello di Velona Resort, Settimo Senso serves contemporary Tuscan cuisine and tasting menus, plus a BBQ menu in summer – it’s best to reserve your table ahead. By the thermal pools, Dolce Vita serves fish and oven-baked pizza from lunchtime until aperitivo.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Montalcino: borgo, castle hamlet or thermal castle – the right location for your 5-star hotel

None of the three hotels is in the town itself – all three sit in the surrounding hills, each on its own estate.

Castello di Velona ResortCastello di Velona Resort · Montalcino

On the Castiglion del Bosco estate you’ll find the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, around 2,000 hectares in the Val d’Orcia with a winery, golf course and cooking school. A private transfer brings you here from Florence (119 km) or Rome-Fiumicino (234 km), and the hotel has its own helipad for helicopter transfers. Our recommendation for anyone who barely wants to leave the estate.

Castello Banfi Il BorgoCastello Banfi Il Borgo · Poggio alle Mura

In Poggio alle Mura, the Castello Banfi Il Borgo stands among the vines, a little over 20 km from Montalcino and around 70 km from Siena. By car it’s about two hours from Florence and Pisa, and around two and a half from Rome. Our recommendation for wine lovers.

Near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, about ten minutes from Montalcino, the Castello di Velona Resort enjoys sweeping views over the Val d’Orcia. Florence is about an hour and 45 minutes away by car, and the nearest train station is Buonconvento; a shuttle is available on request for a fee, and the hotel has its own helipad. Our recommendation for anyone who wants to head into town in the evening.

For orientation: the Val d’Orcia has been a World Heritage Site since 2004, as a cultural landscape. The Fortezza stands at the top of the town, the Romanesque abbey of Sant’Antimo lies down in the valley, and in Bagno Vignoni the village square is a thermal pool.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

In Montalcino, the price tells you little about what you get. The Castello di Velona Resort from 500 € comes with the thermal spring. The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco from 633 € adds 95 € hotel credit and a welcome gift. And the Castello Banfi Il Borgo from 710 € has only 14 rooms, but includes lunch with wine, a wine tasting and rosé on arrival. So decide first what your trip is about – wine, wellness or golf – and book the small hotel early.

History

Castles, borgo and accolades: Montalcino’s luxury hotels with history

The estate of the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco was founded in the 12th century. The castle ruins survive from that time, along with a chapel holding a 14th-century fresco by Pietro Lorenzetti. The Ferragamo family restored the borgo; Chiara Ferragamo furnished it with antiques from all over Italy, and the 18-hole golf course was designed by Tom Weiskopf. Today there are 42 suites and eleven villas here, each villa with its own pool and a 4x4 vehicle.

Castello Banfi Il BorgoCastello Banfi Il Borgo · Montalcino

The Castello Banfi Il Borgo tells a different story. The castle of Poggio alle Mura belonged to the Counts Placidi from 1529 to 1959, and in the 18th century the hamlet grew up in its shelter for the farmers who worked for them. In 1983 the war-damaged castle passed to the Banfi winery of the Mariani family, who restored it and turned the borgo into a hotel. Federico Forquet designed the 14 rooms, and the hotel is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

No booking fee: the benefits simply come on top of the rate you book.

The castle of the Castello di Velona Resort was built in the 11th/12th century as a fortress above the valley of the ancient Via Clodia. In the 15th century it passed to the Medici, later to the Cervini and Martelli families. From 1997 the Piermartini family restored the ruin – and along the way came across the natural thermal spring that feeds the spa today. All 45 units are suites.

Michelin Keys recognize hotels, not restaurants, and two of the three luxury hotels in Montalcino hold them. The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco holds three Michelin Keys, the highest level, and the Castello Banfi Il Borgo holds one. At the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2026, the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco was voted the best resort in Europe and in Italy, and in 2022 it topped the list of the 100 best hotels in the world there. Since 2025 it has held a GSTC certification for sustainability. The Michelin stars of the restaurants are a separate matter: two for Campo del Drago, one for La Sala dei Grappoli.
