Luxury hotels in Girona and on the Costa Brava

Two things first, because they explain the selection. One: Girona here means the province, not just the city. Of our three properties, only one stands in Girona itself – the Hotel Palau Fugit in the Barri Vell, the old town. The Hostal de la Gavina is in S'Agaró on the Costa Brava, some 29 kilometres away, and Mas Mateu at Sant Pere Pescador, some 22.Hostal de la Gavina GironaHostal de la Gavina Girona · StadtmitteTwo: two of the three are hotels in the usual sense and the third is not. Mas Mateu is a complete villa with a private pool, let as a whole – the rate of 12,520 € is not a room rate and must not be read as one.

For the two hotels the picture is very simple: the Hostal de la Gavina starts at 255 € per night, the Hotel Palau Fugit at 262 €. Seven euros apart – and behind that, two properties that could hardly have less in common.

The median across our three properties is 262 €; with three figures that is simply the middle one, here the Palau Fugit's rate. For comparison: in Barcelona, a good 86 kilometres away, the median entry rate across 39 properties is 266 €. On the Costa Brava you therefore pay roughly what you would pay in Barcelona.

Old town, coast or a whole villa – three very different answers

The Hotel Palau Fugit is the city property of the selection: in the Barri Vell, Girona's medieval core. It is a boutique house, and the room sizes show it – the categories run from 16 to 31 square metres. The entry is a Palau Room with balcony; at the top sits a penthouse called Fugit Torre at 31 square metres with a view over the city. If you want to walk the old town, this is the right address – if you need space, it is not.Mas Mateu Costa BravaMas Mateu Costa Brava · Costa BravaThe Hostal de la Gavina at S'Agaró is the exact opposite: a coastal property with 18 categories from 25 to 80 square metres. The entry is a King Classic Room with terrace; above it sit Superior rooms with sea view, several suites and, at the top, the Royal Suite at 80 square metres with sea view and terrace. For families the property lists a Family Room of 60 square metres and a Family Residence with three bedrooms.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. It belongs to the Mandarin Oriental Exclusive Homes and is let on request only.

What our travel advisors suggest

The decision here is not made on price – seven euros separate the two hotels. It is made on location: Girona is a city for walking, with one of the best-preserved old towns in Catalonia; the Costa Brava is a coast for staying. Both in one day works; both in one property does not.

The second point concerns the benefits, and it matters more than usual here: breakfast, upgrade and late check-out apply at the two hotels – at Mas Mateu they do not. That villa brings a package of its own, including a concierge credit of 500 EUR per stay. Anyone expecting the standard benefits should know that in advance.

The three properties in detail

Three properties, two hotel programmes and one with none – and three entirely different benefit packages. No property here carries what another does, which is unusual for a selection this size.Hotel Palau Fugit GironaHotel Palau Fugit Girona · Barri VellThe two hotels first, then the villa.

Hotel Palau Fugit Girona – 262 €

The city property in the Barri Vell, Girona's old town, from around 262 € per night. It is the only property in our selection that actually stands in Girona, and the only one without a hotel programme – so no points are earned here.

Its nine categories measure 16 to 31 square metres; the entry is a Palau Room with balcony and the largest category is a penthouse. On benefits it carries breakfast for two, a room upgrade subject to availability, early check-in and late check-out, complimentary WiFi and 50 USD hotel credit. It is also the only property with a two-night minimum stay.

Hostal de la Gavina Girona – 255 €

The lowest entry rate of the selection at 255 € per night – and the coastal property: it stands at S'Agaró on the Costa Brava, some 29 kilometres from Girona. It belongs to the Leaders Club.

With 18 categories from 25 to 80 square metres it has by far the widest choice, including several suites with sea view as well as a family room and a family residence with three bedrooms. On benefits it is the richest property: alongside breakfast, upgrade, check-in and check-out and WiFi also complimentary access to the spa and fitness area, a welcome gift and 4× 30 USD credit for massages at the spa. There is expressly no minimum stay here.

Mas Mateu Costa Brava – 12,520 €

And now the property that stands apart. Mas Mateu at Sant Pere Pescador is not a room booking: you rent a complete villa with private pool and terrace – hence the rate of 12,520 €, roughly 49 times the median of our selection and with nothing to do with a room rate.

It belongs to the Mandarin Oriental Exclusive Homes and is let on request only; our data records a minimum stay of seven nights for it. The usual hotel benefits do not apply here – instead a package of its own: 500 EUR concierge credit per stay, a property manager with additional staff on request, private pool and terrace, exclusive leisure, sports or wellness facilities and a private chef service on request (food and beverages are charged separately).

What a luxury hotel in Girona costs

For the two hotels the answer is short: the Hostal de la Gavina starts at 255 € per night, the Hotel Palau Fugit at 262 €. The median across our three properties is 262 € – with three figures, the middle one.

Mas Mateu at 12,520 € stays out of any range: it is a whole villa, not a room rate. Reading that figure as an upper limit compares apples with pears.

In Spanish terms Girona therefore sits at the level of the big cities: Barcelona comes to 266 € across 39 properties, Madrid to 305 € across 32. Cheaper are Palma at 235 € across eleven properties and Valencia at 206 € across six. The gap to Barcelona is thus barely measurable – unlike the gap between a city of millions and an old town you can cross in twenty minutes.

Benefits – two hotels and a holiday house

Here a close reading pays off more than elsewhere, because our three properties carry three different packages.

At the two hotels – the Hostal de la Gavina and the Hotel Palau Fugitbreakfast for two, a room upgrade subject to availability, early check-in and late check-out and complimentary WiFi apply. The Palau Fugit adds 50 USD hotel credit; the Gavina instead complimentary access to the spa and fitness area, a welcome gift and 4× 30 USD credit for massages at the spa. Mas Mateu carries none of these benefits – but a package of its own, with 500 EUR concierge credit per stay, a property manager with additional staff on request and a private chef service on request.

With every booking through suitespot you receive a comprehensive package of suitespot benefits:

  • Complimentary breakfast for two
  • Room upgrade subject to availability
  • Up to 100 USD hotel credit per stay
  • Early check-in and late check-out subject to availability
  • Standard points and status benefits in the hotel programmes

Girona, the Costa Brava and the ways there

If you want the city, it is the Hotel Palau Fugit – the only property in the Barri Vell, with the cathedral, the painted houses along the Onyar and the Jewish quarter on the doorstep. If you want the water, it is the Hostal de la Gavina at S'Agaró, with the widest choice of rooms among our three properties and seven euros lower at entry.Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. For Leaders Club members the Gavina is the only address in the selection; for Fans of Mandarin Oriental, Mas Mateu.

For orientation: our three properties lie close together – around 21 kilometres between the Gavina and Mas Mateu, 22 between the Palau Fugit and Mas Mateu, 29 between the Palau Fugit and the Gavina. From any of them you can see both the old town and the coast in a single day.

To Barcelona it is around 86 kilometres from Girona and from S'Agaró alike, measured to the middle of our portfolio there. A combination of Barcelona and the Costa Brava is put together by our travel advisors as a single booking; in Spain we also feature properties in Madrid, on Mallorca and in Valencia.

Frequently asked questions about luxury hotels in Girona

How much does a luxury hotel in Girona cost?

Our two hotels start at 255 € per night (Hostal de la Gavina at S'Agaró) and 262 € (Hotel Palau Fugit in Girona's old town). The median across our three properties is 262 €.

Mas Mateu at 12,520 € does not belong in that range: there you rent a whole villa, not a room category. For comparison: in Barcelona the median entry rate across 39 properties is 266 €.

Why does one property cost 12,520 € a night?

Because Mas Mateu Costa Brava is not a hotel room but a complete villa with private pool and terrace, let as a whole. The rate covers the entire property – not per person and not per room.

It belongs to the Mandarin Oriental Exclusive Homes, is let on request only, and our data records a minimum stay of seven nights. Our travel advisors put together the offer for your group and your dates.

Which property is in Girona itself?

Only the Hotel Palau Fugit. It stands in the Barri Vell, the medieval core of the city – cathedral, Onyar houses and Jewish quarter are all within walking distance.

The Hostal de la Gavina is at S'Agaró on the Costa Brava, some 29 kilometres away, and Mas Mateu at Sant Pere Pescador, some 22. On this page Girona is the province, not the city alone.

Can I earn points and use my status in Girona?

At two of the three properties. The Hostal de la Gavina belongs to the Leaders Club: regular points are credited there when you give your Leaders Club number at booking. Mas Mateu belongs to Fans of Mandarin Oriental.

The Hotel Palau Fugit takes part in no hotel programme – so there are no points or status benefits there. The suitespot benefits apply at both hotels all the same.

Is there a minimum stay?

At the Hotel Palau Fugit yes: two nights. At the Hostal de la Gavina expressly not.

For Mas Mateu our data records a minimum stay of seven nights – which fits a villa let as a whole and on request only. Our travel advisors will confirm it for your dates.

Girona or Barcelona – which suits better?

On price there is almost nothing in it: Girona sits at a median of 262 €, Barcelona at 266 € across 39 properties. The distance is around 86 kilometres.

The difference is a different one: Barcelona is a major city with a correspondingly large choice, Girona an old town you can cross in twenty minutes – with the Costa Brava on the doorstep. Many of our guests combine the two; our travel advisors put that together as a single booking.

What room categories are there?

The Hostal de la Gavina has the widest choice with 18 categories from 25 to 80 square metres – from the King Classic Room with terrace through Superior rooms with sea view to the Royal Suite at 80 square metres. For families there is a family room of 60 square metres and a family residence with three bedrooms.

The Hotel Palau Fugit lists nine categories from 16 to 31 square metres, including a penthouse. Mas Mateu has exactly one category: the Eleven Bedroom Villa with private pool.

What other destinations do you feature in Spain?

Among others Barcelona with 39 properties and a median entry rate of 266 €, Madrid with 32 properties at 305 €, Palma with eleven properties at 235 € and Valencia with six at 206 €.

Girona therefore sits in the upper middle – and is at the same time the destination with the smallest selection. If you want to combine the Costa Brava with Barcelona, you are in the right place: the two lie around 86 kilometres apart.
