Clarance Hotel Lille · Vieux-LilleFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Lille and chose one: a luxury hotel in one such mansion – with a list that begins with two single rooms. What that means for booking is below. Our choice for Lille is the Clarance Hotel Lille on the Rue de la Barre in Vieux-Lille, five hundred metres from the Grand Place. In our ranking it stands at 4.3 out of 5, and a night starts at 194 euros. The hotel is independently run and belongs to Relais & Châteaux.
Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel that stays behind the façade in Vieux-Lille: a town mansion of 1736, built for the Comtesse d’Hespel, with a French garden one does not suspect from the street. Dinner is at La Table, the restaurant with one Michelin star and chef Gaëtan Citerne – a starred restaurant inside the hotel, in a city where one otherwise drives out for it. Grand Place, Vieille Bourse and Beaux-Arts lie within a kilometre, the TGV to Paris takes an hour. Our recommended category is called Junior Suite.
Two single rooms at the start – and the recommendation is not in the list.
The list: 20 square metres in the Comfort Single and the Privilege Single – two single rooms; then 24 in the Comfort and 27 in the Privilege, both on the garden side, 35 in the Suite on the quiet rear side and 78 in the Clarance Suite to the city.
What that means: the entry at 194 euros is a single room. Anyone coming as a couple starts at the Comfort at 24 – the first double room, with the view one travels to this mansion for: the garden.
And the recommendation goes by another name here. The next level above the Privilege is simply called Suite, has 35 square metres and lies on the quiet rear side; above it comes only the Clarance Suite at 78 to the city. Anyone booking the recommendation tells our travel advisors “the suite at 35”.
The package: three benefits – breakfast, upgrade on arrival and a welcome gift. With six categories, the upgrade here is the jump from the garden side into the suite.
Our advice: Book the garden, and let the upgrade work. The Privilege at 27 on the garden side is the category from which the upgrade leads into the suite – anyone wanting the suite for certain books it at 35 and knows it lies on the quiet rear side.
The Clarance Hotel Lille stands at 32 Rue de la Barre in Vieux-Lille – five hundred metres from the Grand Place, a kilometre from Lille-Flandres station and from the Palais des Beaux-Arts, 1.3 from Lille-Europe station and nine from Lesquin airport.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting Lille on foot – and for those arriving by Eurostar or TGV who roll the suitcase a quarter of an hour through the old town.
What lies within reach: the Grand Place with the Vieille Bourse and the booksellers, five hundred metres; the cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Treille, in the quarter; the Palais des Beaux-Arts with Rubens, Goya and the relief maps of the fortresses, a kilometre.
For orientation: Lesquin airport is twenty minutes away, Paris an hour by TGV, Brussels forty minutes, London an hour and a half by Eurostar. La Piscine in Roubaix, the museum in the art-nouveau swimming pool, is a metro ride. In Vieux-Lille one walks on cobblestones.
The Clarance Hotel Lille has six categories, two suites among them.
The single rooms: 20 square metres in the Comfort Single and the Privilege Single.
The double rooms: 24 in the Comfort and 27 in the Privilege, both on the garden side.
The suites: 35 in the Suite on the quiet rear side – which corresponds to our recommended Junior Suite – and 78 in the Clarance Suite to the city.
On the view: this hotel’s motif is the French garden behind the mansion – the two double rooms lie on the garden side. The Suite lies on the rear side, the Clarance Suite towards the city.
What applies equally to every category: breakfast for two, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability and a welcome gift.
A night at the luxury hotel in Lille starts at 194 euros.
The suitespot benefits apply here from the first night. Included are: breakfast for two, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability and a welcome gift.
When it is loveliest: from April to October, when breakfast is served in the garden and the terraces on the Grand Place are full.
What belongs to Lille: the Braderie. On the first weekend of September the whole city becomes a flea market, with moules-frites and two million visitors. That is not a warning but the calendar: anyone coming then asks months ahead – and anyone wanting Vieux-Lille empty comes the week after.
When to ask early: for the Braderie in early September, in December for the Christmas market and at Easter.
How long to stay: two nights for old town, Beaux-Arts and La Table – three if Roubaix and La Piscine are added.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
The North is the region France long overlooked and has rediscovered since the Eurostar: brick instead of limestone, beer instead of wine, estaminets instead of bistros – and Lille as its capital, European Capital of Culture in 2004 and proving it again every year since.

First the Vieille Bourse: the courtyard of 1653 with booksellers and chess players, on the Grand Place. Second the Palais des Beaux-Arts: the second-largest art museum in France, a kilometre. Third La Piscine in Roubaix: the museum in the art-deco swimming pool of 1932, by metro.
The package at this hotel is breakfast, upgrade and gift.
What our travel advisors arrange most often: the category on the garden side, for the reason stated above, the table at La Table – because a starred restaurant with few tables inside the hotel is not a given – and the Eurostar or TGV times, because Lille is the city one reaches without a car.
