Your guide to the best luxury hotel in Salamanca

Salamanca is the city with Spain's oldest university and stone that turns golden in the evening: the Villamayor sandstone of the Plaza Mayor, the two cathedrals and the university façades takes the light, and the old town has been World Heritage since 1988.Hospes Palacio de San Esteban SalamancaHospes Palacio de San Esteban Salamanca · SalamancaFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Salamanca and picked one: a single luxury hotel in a 16th-century convent – with a welcome gift that depends on which door you walk through.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

One luxury hotel in Salamanca – and who it suits

Our choice for Salamanca is the Hospes Palacio de San Esteban on the Arroyo de Santo Domingo, below the cathedrals. It sits at 3.6 out of 5 in our ranking, and a night starts at 129 euros. The hotel belongs to Design Hotels and takes part in Marriott Bonvoy.

Why we recommend it: Because the building itself is the reason: a 16th-century convent in the city's golden stone, with vaults and timber beams, where the restaurant El Monje sits in the old convent kitchen and wine cellar. Add a garden with a seasonal outdoor pool looking at the cathedrals – in an old town where a pool is a rare thing. Our recommended category is the King Dreamer.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

The welcome gift at this hotel depends on the door you walk through – there are two versions.

Often nobody says what a welcome gift actually is. Here it is spelled out: in the rooms there is a fruit basket, chocolates and a bottle of cava. In the suites there is a bottle of champagne or manzanilla with Serrano ham and cheese.

That is rare, and typical of the Spanish hotel group the house belongs to. And the boundary between the two gifts runs in this hotel exactly where the floor area jumps: from 35 to 55 square metres.

Add a special feature: our recommended category, the Dreamer, is called Olive View – the olive trees in the convent garden. A view like this is rare. It measures 25 square metres, and it is the entry point.

Our advice: decide the gift along with the room. Anyone wanting cava and olives books the Dreamer – 25 square metres, 129 euros, a view you will hardly find elsewhere. Anyone wanting champagne and ham books one of the two suites and gets the space with it. Tell our travel advisors which door you mean.

Where to stay in Salamanca: in the convent, below the cathedrals

The Hospes Palacio de San Esteban lies on the Arroyo de Santo Domingo, on the southern edge of the old town, a few steps from the convent of San Esteban and below the two cathedrals – where the old town drops towards the Tormes.

Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants to take Salamanca on foot: Plaza Mayor, university and cathedrals all lie within ten minutes.

What is within reach: the Plaza Mayor, the most beautiful in Spain in the opinion of most who have seen it, ten minutes; the university with the façade on which you look for the frog, five minutes; and the Casa Lis, the Art Nouveau museum with the glass façade above the river, just around the corner.

For orientation: Salamanca station is half an hour on foot to the north; the train to Madrid takes an hour and a half. Madrid-Barajas airport is two and a half hours by car, Porto four.

Five categories: the best hotel in Salamanca from the inside

The Hospes Palacio de San Esteban offers five categories, two suites among them.

The ladder: 25 square metres in the Dreamer and the Superior, 35 in the Deluxe, 55 and 60 in the suites. In a convent the cells are cut the way monks lived – the 25 square metres are what the building dictates.

On the outlook: the Dreamer looks into the convent garden as Olive View, the largest suite over the city as City View. For the other three, our travel advisors confirm the outlook before you book.

What applies to every category alike: breakfast for two people, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability and regular points with Marriott Bonvoy – and a welcome gift that looks different depending on the door.

What a night at the luxury hotel in Salamanca costs

A night at the luxury hotel in Salamanca starts at 129 euros. That is a remarkably affordable entry point for a luxury hotel.

There is expressly no minimum stay: a single night is bookable. Included are: breakfast for two people, the welcome gift – fruit, chocolates and cava in the rooms, champagne or manzanilla with ham and cheese in the suites –, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability, regular points with Marriott Bonvoy, and early check-in and late check-out subject to availability.

When it is at its best: in May and June and in September and October. The plateau is mild, the stone glows in the evening, and the pool in the garden is open.

What belongs to Salamanca: the heat of July and August, with days above 35 degrees – and the cold of January, when the wind crosses the Meseta. Both are Castile; a hotel with thick convent walls is built for both.

When the city lives: in term time. Salamanca has 30,000 students, and from October to June the Plaza Mayor belongs to them in the evening.

When to enquire early: for Semana Santa and for the Ferias in September. With five categories and one with an olive view, lead time decides.

How long to stay: two nights for the city – or three if Ávila and the Sierra de Francia are added.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

Convent garden, welcome gift and exclusive services in a 5-star hotel

Castile and León is the Spain of the high plateau: wide, dry, with cities that seem built from a single stone. Salamanca is the youngest of them in spirit and the oldest in fabric – the university has existed since 1218, and the students keep the city at an age its façades do not have.

Three things belong to it. First the Plaza Mayor: baroque, closed on four sides, lit in the evening – you sit under the arcades and stay. Second the two cathedrals: the old one Romanesque, the new one Gothic, built against each other, and on the new façade a restorer set an astronaut into the stone in 1992. Third Ávila: the city with the complete wall, an hour east, on the way to Madrid.

The package at this hotel is breakfast, welcome gift, upgrade and points.

What our travel advisors arrange most often: the table at El Monje, because a restaurant in a convent kitchen is the reservation most easily forgotten, and the hire car, because Ávila, the sierra and the ham villages otherwise do not fit together.

And for members of Marriott Bonvoy: our benefits come on top of the programme's, they do not replace them. Give us your membership number when you enquire.
