Le Meridien Chiang Rai · Amphoe Mueang Chiang RaiFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Chiang Rai and picked one: a single luxury hotel on the river – where, of all things, the river view is the exception. Our choice for Chiang Rai is the Le Meridien Chiang Rai in the Amphoe Mueang Chiang Rai district, on the bank of the Kok. It sits at 4.1 out of 5 in our ranking, carries Marriott Bonvoy, and a night starts at 77 euros – one of the most affordable entry points of all.

And the question of which of them look at the river is where it gets interesting.
The view people come to Chiang Rai for comes with two categories out of sixteen.
This is how the views divide:
• Two categories face the river.
• Four face the garden.
• Six have a view whose direction our travel advisors confirm for you.
So the view of the Kok, the water this hotel stands on, is the exception.
In practice that means: the river view does not come by itself here. If you want it, you have to ask for it by name; book simply “a room with a view” and you are more likely to get another direction.
Our advice: say “river” to our travel advisors explicitly – and ask in the same breath whether the two categories are available at all for your dates. At two out of sixteen, that is the real availability question and it can be settled in one message.
The Le Meridien Chiang Rai stands in the Amphoe Mueang Chiang Rai district, on the bank of the Kok and outside the town centre. That is quieter than the centre and still close enough to drive in for the evening.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone seeing northern Thailand from a fixed base who wants to stay on the water.
What is within reach: Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple – not a historic building but an art project running since 1997 by the painter Chalermchai Kositpipat, rendered white and set with mirror glass; the Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten, on the northern edge of town; and the night bazaar in the centre, where the food stalls of the hill peoples stand side by side.
For orientation: Mae Fah Luang airport is about twenty minutes by car. Allow just under two hours to the Golden Triangle on the Mekong, three to four to Chiang Mai over the mountain road, and the tea gardens of Doi Mae Salong lie an hour and a half to the north-west.
The Le Meridien Chiang Rai offers 16 categories, two of them suites.
Our travel advisors confirm the exact size of your room before you book.
The designations are graded – and the outlook, though unevenly. Twelve of the sixteen categories come with a view. Four of them face the garden, two the river; for the remaining six our travel advisors confirm the direction.
So the view of the Kok is the rarest here – even though the hotel stands on its bank. So we say it plainly: ask for the river view by name if it matters to you. And ask about the floor at the same time – on a river, height is the difference between seeing the bank and seeing the water.
What applies to every category alike: breakfast for two people, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability, and a welcome gift – an afternoon tea set.
A night at the luxury hotel in Chiang Rai starts at 77 euros.
Six benefits are included, and all apply from the first night: breakfast for two people, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability, regular points and status benefits with Marriott Bonvoy, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability, the afternoon tea set on arrival.
When it is most pleasant: from November to February. This is the cool season in the north: comfortably warm by day, fresh at night in the hills, and the sky is clear.
When it is greenest: from August to October. The rain mostly falls in the late afternoon, the rice terraces steam afterwards, and the Kok runs full.
When the mountains are the better target: from March to May. It gets hot on the plain then, and this is the season to head up – to Doi Mae Salong or Doi Tung, several degrees cooler and where the tea gardens are. Ask us about day trips there.
When to enquire early: for the weeks around New Year and for Songkran in April. With a single hotel in town, lead time decides – and if you want one of the two river categories, doubly so.
How long to stay: three nights for the town and the temples – or five if you add the Golden Triangle and the tea gardens.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
Chiang Rai is often treated as a day trip from Chiang Mai, and that loses what it is really about: the transition from the plain into the mountains, and three borders lying close together.

Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comThree things belong to it. First Wat Rong Khun: a white temple under construction since 1997 and never meant to be quite finished – you enter over a bridge of outstretched hands, and the painting inside is startlingly of the present. Second the Golden Triangle: the point on the Mekong where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, today with a museum on the history of opium. Third Doi Mae Salong, a mountain village founded by remnants of the Chinese Nationalist army, where Yunnan cooking and tea growing are at home to this day.
What our travel advisors arrange most often: a driver for two days – the sights lie far apart, and public transport in the north is a test of patience of its own – and the longtail boat trip on the Kok, which passes the hotel itself.
The benefits of this hotel apply whatever your standing with Marriott Bonvoy: the points and status benefits come on top, and the afternoon tea set is waiting regardless.
