Between the cheapest and the most expensive hotel in this selection lies a considerable gap – and it almost always comes down to location rather than quality. Our travel advisors will tell you where the premium is worth paying and where it is not. At the top of our recommendation: the InterContinental Lyon - Hôtel Dieu.

InterContinental Lyon - Hôtel Dieu · City CentreFor this guide we have put together the best hotels in Lyon: four luxury hotels, almost all of them 5-star hotels, with a typical rate of 223 € per night. The best hotels in Lyon stand on both sides of the Saône and in four very different buildings.
Sofitel Lyon Bellecour · 2. ArrondissementOn the Presqu’île, the peninsula between the rivers, lies the Sofitel Lyon Bellecour – at 120 € the cheapest 5-star hotel in Lyon.
On the bank of the Rhône follows the InterContinental Lyon - Hôtel Dieu, which lives in the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, for centuries the city’s hospital – and with 14 categories the hotel with the widest choice.
In Vieux Lyon stands the Cour des Loges Lyon Radisson Collection Hotel, a group of Renaissance hotels around a courtyard.
And above the city, on the Fourvière hillside, lies the Villa Maïa Lyon – for us the first address in Lyon.
In Lyon you are not booking a room but a building – and the four come from four different centuries.
The InterContinental Lyon - Hôtel Dieu sits in the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, the old hospital on the Rhône with the great dome. The Cour des Loges Lyon Radisson Collection Hotel is made of Renaissance hotels in the lanes of Vieux Lyon, joined by a roofed courtyard. The Sofitel Lyon Bellecour stands in the middle of the Presqu’île, between the two rivers. And the Villa Maïa Lyon is a contemporary hotel on the hillside, built for the view across the city.
That has a very practical consequence: the rooms are not comparable. The Villa Maïa Lyon has apartments of 130 and 100 square metres; the Cour des Loges Lyon Radisson Collection Hotel carries six categories in total – in a Renaissance hotel no two rooms are alike.
Our advice: in Lyon have the category described to you, not just named. The name of the category says less here than elsewhere; our travel advisors know the layouts and will tell you which room in which hotel is the right one.
Two conditions with it: at the Cour des Loges Lyon Radisson Collection Hotel the credit of 50 US dollars comes from the premium room upwards – book there and the category is worth planning. And one rare point: at all four hotels the suitespot benefits apply from the first night, and each of the four hotels serves a different loyalty programme.
Lyon is comfortably walkable, and four settings come into question.
Boscolo Lyon Hotel · Presqu'îleOn the Presqu’île you stay between the Place Bellecour and the shopping streets, with both riverbanks within reach. Our recommendation: the Sofitel Lyon Bellecour.
On the bank of the Rhône lie the riverside walks and the Grand Hôtel-Dieu with its courtyards. Our recommendation: the InterContinental Lyon - Hôtel Dieu.
In Vieux Lyon begin the Renaissance lanes and the traboules, the passages that cut through the blocks. Our recommendation: the Cour des Loges Lyon Radisson Collection Hotel.
And on the Fourvière hillside you stay above it all, with the basilica and the Roman theatres higher up. Our recommendation: the Villa Maïa Lyon.
For orientation: from Vieux Lyon the funicular climbs to Fourvière in a few minutes, the Beaujolais begins three quarters of an hour north, and Paris is two hours by high-speed train.
The best hotels in Lyon offer 37 categories, 12 of them suites.
Cour des Loges Lyon Radisson Collection Hotel · Vieux LyonThe largest are at the Villa Maïa Lyon: three apartments of 130, 100 and another 100 square metres. After them comes the Prestige Suite of the InterContinental Lyon - Hôtel Dieu at 74.
In choice the InterContinental Lyon - Hôtel Dieu leads with 14 categories, followed by the Villa Maïa Lyon with ten.
As for the view, each hotel has its own subject, and each exists exactly once: the river from the Sofitel Lyon Bellecour and the city from the Villa Maïa Lyon on the hillside.
Tell our travel advisors whether it should be the water or the rooftops.

When it is at its best: from May to June and from September to October. People sit out along the banks, the bouchons are open, and the vineyards north and south are an hour away.
When it is cheap: in January and February. Those are the months with the lowest rates – and Lyon is a winter city: the bouchons were built for that season.
When to book early: for the Fête des Lumières around 8 December, when the city is lit for four evenings, and for the big trade fairs.
And whatever the date: the suitespot benefits apply in January exactly as they do in September.
How long to stay: two to three nights – one for Vieux Lyon and the traboules, one for the Presqu’île with the market hall and the art museum, and one for Fourvière with the Roman theatres.
That works without restriction here: at all four hotels the benefits apply from the first night.
And for collecting, Lyon is a special case: each of the four hotels serves a different programme – IHG One Rewards, ALL (Accor), Radisson Rewards and the Leaders Club.
What our travel advisors arrange most often in Lyon is the evening in a bouchon: the small taverns with checked tablecloths where the same things have been served for generations – sausage in brioche, quenelle, praline tart – and where the Beaujolais comes in a pot, the bottle with the thick base.
Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comAdd to that: the traboules, the passages that take you straight through the blocks in Vieux Lyon and the Croix-Rousse and that served the silk weavers; the basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière above the city; the Roman theatres beside it, still played in during the summer; and the Halles Paul Bocuse, the market hall named after the cook who made Lyon the capital of French cooking.
And the food: quenelle de brochet, the pike dumpling in crayfish sauce; salade lyonnaise with a poached egg; Saint-Marcellin, the cheese from just up the road; and the wines – Beaujolais to the north, Côtes du Rhône to the south.
With breakfast Lyon is clear-cut: it is included for two at all four hotels.
On top come the upgrade chance and late check-out. A hotel credit comes at three of the four hotels: 100 US dollars at the InterContinental Lyon - Hôtel Dieu and the Sofitel Lyon Bellecour, and 50 US dollars from the premium room upwards at the Cour des Loges Lyon Radisson Collection Hotel.
