Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel that gave Zagreb an artist: Boris Bućan, the city’s poster artist, has furnished the 110 rooms and the corridors with his work – in the Art Deco building of 1928 by the architects Freudenreich and Deutsch that once belonged to the Jewish community. Since opening in October 2023 it has what Zagreb lacked before: a spa with an indoor pool, a rooftop bar above the roofs of the Lower Town and Yezi, a pan-Asian restaurant that fills with the neighbours in the evening too. Anyone wanting the quiet rear side takes the 23 and breakfasts at the Dolac market, three minutes away. Both are good decisions; one should only make them, not discover them.

Our advice: Read the package before you choose the category. The Art Studio at 37 is the category here in which price and package fit together. Where to stay in Zagreb: in the Lower Town, three minutes from Jelačić Square
The art'otel Zagreb stands at Petrinjska ulica 7 in the Lower Town of Zagreb – three hundred metres from Ban Jelačić Square, eight hundred from the main station and ten kilometres from the airport.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting to see Zagreb on foot – and for anyone stopping for a night in the capital on the way to the coast instead of driving past it.
What lies within reach: the Dolac market behind Jelačić Square, the red umbrellas every morning; the Upper Town with St Mark’s and its coat-of-arms roof, by funicular or stairs in ten minutes; and Tkalčićeva, the street of cafés where Zagreb spends its evenings.
For orientation: the main station Zagreb Glavni kolodvor lies at the end of the Green Horseshoe parks; to Ljubljana two hours, to Vienna and Budapest six. The airport is half an hour away. The coast begins at Rijeka, two hours by car.
