What is within reach: Nidaros Cathedral, the largest medieval church in Scandinavia, national sanctuary and end point of the St Olav Ways; Bakklandet on the far bank, a row of coloured timber buildings along the Nidelva, reached over the Gamle Bybro, the old town bridge with its red arch; and the wharves on the river, warehouses on piles from the time when goods were shipped here rather than strolled past.
For orientation: Værnes airport is about forty minutes by car, and the train runs regularly. The Trondheimsfjord begins on the doorstep, and anyone heading further north boards the coastal steamers here or takes the Nordland line.
