Where to stay in al-Chasab: on the water of Musandam
For the Atana Musandam Resort the record states no district – and unlike in a metropolis that is not a gap here but the accurate answer: al-Chasab is a small town where the question of which quarter is not asked. What counts is the direction of the water, and that is decided inside the hotel (more on it below).
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants to be at the fjords themselves rather than in a city with a sea view.
What is within reach: the Khor ash Sham, the largest of the inlets, worked by traditional dhows – wooden sailing boats, today as a day trip, and dolphins join them regularly. In the khor lies the small Telegraph Island, where the British ran a relay station on the telegraph line to India in the 1860s; the English phrase round the bend is traced back to that station.
Inland the Jebel Harim rises to around 2,000 metres – the track up passes slabs of rock with the fossils of sea creatures in them, because this mountain range was once a seabed.
For orientation: off the coast lies the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran beyond it; in the harbour of al-Chasab you see the fast boats that carry the trade across the strait. Dubai is about three to four hours away by road, border crossing included.

• The three categories at 47 square metres differ only in their label: twice “Mountain and Canal View”, once “Horizon View”. Same floor area, same layout, different line of sight.

• A dhow day in the Khor ash Sham. Not a trip to a sight but a day on a wooden boat that moves slowly: past fishing villages with no road, dolphins at the bow, and an anchor stop for swimming.
• The drive up the Jebel Harim, around 2,000 metres. The air turns noticeably cooler at the top, and you look into a labyrinth of ridges with the old summer villages of the Shihuh between them.
• The harbour. It is not an attraction but a place of work – and therefore one of the most interesting spots in the sultanate: this is trade across the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran beyond it.
