Your guide to the best luxury hotel in Regensberg

Regensberg is a medieval village on a ridge in the Zurich lowlands, founded in the thirteenth century and barely grown since.Hotel Krone RegensbergHotel Krone Regensberg · HirsmühleAt the top stand a round tower, a deep draw well and a village square lined with restored half-timbered facades; below, the slope drops away into vineyards. For this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Regensberg and chose one: the Krone, a 5-star hotel.

At no extra cost: booking through suitespot costs the same as booking direct with the hotel – the benefits come on top, free of charge.

The 5-star hotel in Regensberg – who it suits

A night at the Hotel Krone Regensberg costs €263. That includes breakfast for two, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability and a welcome gift.

Why we recommend it: it is the position inside the village itself. The Krone stands at the Oberburg, at the top of the ridge, in a building that began as a medieval tavern; the half-timbered facades have been restored. The kitchen is listed in the Michelin Guide. And Zurich is about half an hour away – close enough for an evening in the city, far enough to hear nobody in the evening.

Our travel advisors’ insider tip

Two things set this destination apart from the others.

The choice is small, and that is good news. There are four categories: Superior at 24 square metres, Deluxe at 30, Junior Suite at 32 and Suite at 54. One question to our travel advisors and the decision is made.

The view is not the same everywhere. Many rooms look out over the village, some towards the Alps or the tower. Say what you want to look at when you enquire – with four categories that can be settled.

And plan the evening in the village, not in Zurich. Regensberg after dark is the actual reason to sleep here rather than in the city.

Where to stay in Regensberg: Oberburg, at the top of the village

The Krone stands at Oberburg 1 – the upper, medieval part of Regensberg, at the top of the ridge.

Our recommendation for a first visit: the village is walked in ten minutes, and that is exactly the point. From the hotel it is a few steps to the tower, to the draw well and to the edge of the ridge, where the view runs out over the lowlands.

Zurich is the neighbour. The city lies about 20 kilometres south-east, roughly half an hour by car. Down in the valley is Dielsdorf with the station, and the S-Bahn runs from there into Zurich.

Zurich airport is the nearest, about 15 kilometres away.

Rooms and suites: four categories from 24 to 55 square metres

The hotel offers four categories between 24 and 55 square metres.

At the bottom is the Superior Room at 24 square metres, above it the Deluxe Room at 30. Then comes the Junior Suite at 32, and at the top the Suite at 54 square metres.

On the view: the view over the village is this hotel's motif, and in a medieval centre it is the right one. Some rooms also look towards the Alps or the Regensberg tower.

Our travel advisors recommend the Deluxe Room.

What a night at the luxury hotel in Regensberg costs

A night at the luxury hotel in Regensberg costs €263.

When it is at its best: September and October. The vineyards below the village are harvested then, and the ridge often stands above the fog lying in the lowlands.

When it is busiest: on Sundays in summer. Regensberg is a day trip out of Zurich – the square is full by day and empty by evening.

When it is quietest: from January to March. A medieval village in winter, with an open fire as the destination, is a trip of its own.

How long to stay: two nights. One for the village and the table, one for Zurich or a walk along the Lägern ridge.

And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.

A medieval village and exclusive services at the 5-star hotel

Regensberg is small, and everything that makes it lies together on one ridge.

The first thing is the village. It was laid out in the thirteenth century by the barons of Regensberg and has kept its plan: an oval square, a round tower at one end, half-timbered facades all round. You walk through it once and have seen everything – and then walk it again anyway, because the light has changed.

The second is the Lägern ridge. Regensberg sits on the western end of this narrow spine, the easternmost spur of the Jura. The path along it is narrow and partly rocky, and on clear days the Alps stand to the south and the Black Forest to the north.

The third is the wine. Below the village the south-facing slopes drop away into vineyards; Regensberg is one of the wine-growing communes of the Zurich lowlands, and you can taste that on the hotel's list.

What our travel advisors arrange most often here is the table – the kitchen is listed in the Michelin Guide, and at a hotel of this size the reservation is not a detail but half the trip.
