Alicante is small enough that its location only has to answer one question: hill or beach? The Hospes Amerigo answers it with both.

From there stairs and a lift lead up to Santa Bárbara castle; downhill it is a few minutes to the Explanada de España, the promenade with its wavy marble paving under the palms, and on to the Postiguet, the city beach.
Behind it lies the Barrio de Santa Cruz, the old quarter on the slope: whitewashed façades, flowerpots on the walls, stepped lanes instead of streets. Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants to take a city on foot – in Alicante everything you came to see sits within a circle you can walk in a morning.
For orientation: Alicante-Elche airport is about twenty minutes from the city. Boats leave the harbour for Tabarca, the small island in the marine reserve, and the fast train reaches Madrid in a little over two and a half hours.
