So seven square metres separate the first three. Thirty-five separate the third from the fourth – the largest category is almost twice the size of the next one down.
With only four categories that means: there is no step in between. You either take one of the three similar categories – where the area makes little difference but the position in the building does – or you take the large one, and that is a jump.
Our advice: ask first whether the 74 square metres are free. There is only one of them in the hotel, and it is the single category where the number really changes something. If it is not available, take the category with the view rather than the one with an extra square metre – tell our travel advisors you want to see the Atlantic.
Where to stay on La Palma: in Tazacorte
The Hotel Hacienda de Abajo stands in Tazacorte, on the west coast of La Palma, in the Aridane valley.
This is the sunniest corner of the island: the trade wind banks up in the north-east, the clouds stay there, and the west stays dry. That is why sugar cane grew here, and why the plantation manor that now holds the hotel stands here.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants an island for walking and still wants to arrive in the evening somewhere that does not look like a walkers' hotel.
What is within reach: the Caldera de Taburiente, the crater at the island's centre, a national park with paths through pine forest; the volcano route in the south, which follows the chain of the most recent eruptions; and the Playa de Tazacorte, the black sand beach below the town.
For orientation: the airport is on the east side, some 35 kilometres away – three quarters of an hour over the pass road. And the Roque de los Muchachos observatory at 2,400 metres takes about the same.
Four categories: the best hotel on La Palma from the inside
The Hotel Hacienda de Abajo carries only four categories, two of them suites. That is rarer than you would think, and it makes the choice simple.
The ladder runs from 32 to 74 square metres. At the bottom stand three categories at 32, 38 and 39; at the top one at 74. Seven square metres separate the lower three, 35 separate the third from the fourth.
In practice: within the three lower categories it is not the area that decides but what comes with the room – balcony, terrace or garden, depending on position in the building.
On the view: one category looks out onto the Atlantic. The valley falls away towards the coast here and the hotel stands high enough for that to matter – it is the category to ask for first if the large one is not free.
And one condition belongs in the same paragraph: the hotel accepts guests aged 14 and over. For a trip with smaller children it is therefore not the right address – tell us early and we will look differently on the island.
