Why we recommend it: Because it is the hotel that gave Engelberg back its belle époque: the building opened in 1904 as the Grandhotel Winterhaus and reopened on 25 June 2021 as the first international five-star-superior hotel in central Switzerland – 129 rooms and suites behind a façade that looks as it did a hundred years ago. On top lies a spa of 880 square metres with a rooftop infinity pool facing the mountains; dinner is at the Cattani with its summer terrace, drinks at the Palace Bar with cigar lounge. Station and abbey lie within four hundred metres, the Titlis cable car eight hundred. Our recommended category is called Titlis Suite.

What makes this hotel special: all nine categories have a mountain view. That means the question of which side does not arise. What separates the categories is the floor space alone – from 25 to 68 square metres.
And then the package with a condition attached: to the credit of 100 US dollars every booking receives, a second credit of 100 US dollars is added – but only for the Park Suite, the Belle Epoque Suite, the Titlis Suite and the Junior Suite, and only from two nights. Such a second credit is rare.

The Kempinski Palace Engelberg stands at Dorfstrasse 40 in the centre of Engelberg – two hundred metres from the station, four hundred from the abbey, eight hundred from the valley station of the Titlis cable car, three kilometres from Lake Trübsee, 26 from Lucerne and 73 from Zurich airport.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone arriving without a car – the train from Lucerne stops two hundred metres away – and for those who would rather dine in the village than up in the ski area.
What lies within reach: Engelberg Abbey with the show cheese dairy and the baroque church, four hundred metres; the Titlis cable car with the rotating gondola to 3,020 metres, eight hundred; Lake Trübsee at 1,800 metres, three kilometres and a cable-car ride.
For orientation: Lucerne is just under an hour away by train, Zurich airport an hour and a half. Lake Lucerne with its paddle steamers begins in Lucerne, the Rigi and Mount Pilatus stand on the other side of the lake. In Engelberg one walks; up the mountain the cable car goes.
