Why we recommend it: Because it is an adults-only hotel – guests from 18 – and so occupies a category of its own in Istria, where the coast is otherwise shaped by family resorts. It belongs to the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, has an outdoor pool, a spa with sauna and hot tub, restaurant and bar in a garden – and Karpinjan beach is two minutes' walk away. Our recommended category is the Superior Pool View.
Nine square metres separate the smallest category from the largest here.
The hotel carries seven categories, five of them called suite, one villa. And all seven lie between 25 and 39 square metres: 25 to 30, 32 to 34, 35, 36, 38, 38 and 39.
Elsewhere the question would now be: is the suite worth it? Here it makes no sense. A suite has 35 to 39 square metres, the villa 32 to 34, the room 25 to 30 – the word says nothing about space, and the space barely differs.
What differs is the view. Three categories look out to sea, three onto the pool. That is the only decision that changes anything.
Our advice: book by the view, not by the name. If you want the sea, ask for one of the three sea-view categories – they measure 36 and 38 square metres – and check at once whether it is free for your dates. At three of seven, that is the real availability question. Tell our travel advisors, and the name becomes a footnote.
The Palazzo Rainis lies in Kastanija, the district north of the old town, where Novigrad runs out into pines and holiday streets. Karpinjan beach is two minutes on foot, the old town a good quarter of an hour along the water.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants quiet and sea and takes the old town as an evening stroll – and for couples, since children are not catered for.
What is within reach: the old town of Novigrad with the church of St Pelagius and its Romanesque crypt; the harbour, where the fish restaurants open in the evening; and the lagoon of Umag to the north, host of the ATP tennis tournament in summer.
For orientation: Poreč with the Euphrasian Basilica is half an hour south, Rovinj just under an hour. Pula airport is about an hour away, Trieste an hour and a half.
The Palazzo Rainis carries seven categories, five suites and one villa among them – and all seven state a floor area.
The ladder runs from 25 to 39 square metres – fourteen square metres between the smallest and the largest category. In between lie 32 to 34, 35, 36 and 38 twice. Anyone looking for space will not find it – anyone looking for a view will.
On the outlook: three of the seven categories face the sea (36, 38 and 38 square metres), three the pool. We do not retell the pool categories here as an alternative; they are simply the ones that do not face the sea. If you want the sea, ask for it by name.
What applies to every category alike: breakfast for two people, the 50 US dollar hotel credit and the upgrade on arrival subject to availability – though an upgrade here brings at most nine square metres.

A stay begins at two nights. Included are: breakfast for two people, a 50 US dollar hotel credit, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability, and early check-in and late check-out subject to availability.
When it is at its best: in June and September. The sea is warm, the old town full enough to be alive in the evening and empty enough to get a table on the harbour.
When it is busiest: in July and August. Istria is then the coast for half of central Europe, and the road from Umag to Poreč stands still at weekends.
When it is quietest: from October to April. Many places on the coast close then; a hotel with a spa is one of those that stay open and for which this is the real season.
When to enquire early: for high summer and for the three sea-view categories. With seven categories it is not the hotel that fills quickly but half of it.
How long to stay: three nights for Novigrad, Poreč and a day on the water – or five if Rovinj and the hinterland with Motovun are added.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
Istria is the peninsula three countries shaped and none quite owns: Venetian towns on the water, Austrian spas, a Croatian hinterland of truffles and Malvazija. Novigrad is its small, quiet edition – a place that never wanted to become a resort.

Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comThree things belong to it. First the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč: sixth-century Byzantine mosaics, World Heritage, half an hour away. Second Motovun, the hill town above the Mirna valley where the white truffles grow – in autumn the reason to come at all. Third the wine road between Novigrad and Buje: Malvazija and Teran, tasted in cellars that have never heard of a reservation.
For everything else there is the hotel credit: 50 US dollars, with no rate condition and no further strings.
What our travel advisors arrange most often: the hire car, because Poreč, Motovun and the wine cellars otherwise do not fit together, and the truffle autumn – October and November, when the hotel is open and the coast empty.
The benefits of this hotel apply independently of any programme membership: the credit and the breakfast come with no small print.

Yes, two nights.
It is at its best in June and September. It is quietest from October to April – the real season for a hotel with a spa, and in autumn the truffles from the Mirna valley come on top.
That depends on your membership: whether a stay here earns points or status nights in your programme, your travel advisor will confirm before you book. The suitespot benefits apply in any case.
