New in the old town: Since July 2024 you can stay at the Kimpton Las Mercedes Santo Domingo in the heart of the Zona Colonial, the first Kimpton in the Dominican Republic. Rafael Moneo preserved a 16th-century building with its original materials and added a modern wing. During the works a 500-year-old well came to light, which you now see in the lounge by the lobby, and up on the roof the pool looks out over the old town.

Its design draws on motifs by Dominican artist Thimo Pimentel, there is live music in the lobby bar every evening, and on the eleventh floor a resident DJ plays at the Burble Rooftop Bar by the pool.
Renewed: The Renaissance Santo Domingo Jaragua Hotel on the Malecón underwent a year-long, 40 million US dollar renovation in 2014 and 2015, with new interiors and amenities. Since January 2016 the Spanish group Catalonia has run the former Hilton tower in the Malecón Center as the Catalonia Santo Domingo, and in November 2016 the InterContinental Santo Domingo opened in Piantini as a 70 million US dollar new build.
