La Pyramide: our hand-picked 5-star hotel in Vienne. Anyone booking through suitespot also receives breakfast for two, a room upgrade subject to availability, hotel credit and VIP service – a package of more than €500.
La Pyramide · Garguattes et VimaineFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Vienne and chose one: one luxury hotel, from 250 € a night. Our choice for Vienne is La Pyramide on Boulevard Fernand Point in the south of town. It stands right by the Roman pyramid, the obelisk from the ancient circus that gave the hotel its name, and the street is named after the chef who made it famous.

So you stay a little away from the bustle and still in the heart of Roman Vienne.
In Vienne, plan the evening first and the room second.
Under Fernand Point, the restaurant at La Pyramide became the training kitchen of an entire generation: Paul Bocuse, the Troisgros brothers and Alain Chapel all learned here. For many guests, dinner is still the real reason for the trip.
Why it matters: evening tables are often taken early. If you book table and room together, after dessert you simply go up to your room, and the next morning breakfast for two is included.
Our advice: tell our travel advisors which evening you have in mind – they reserve the table together with your stay.
For travelers, Vienne opens up in three directions.
The old town lies between the Rhône and the hillside: the Temple of Augustus and Livia stands almost entirely intact in the middle of its square, the Gothic Saint-Maurice Cathedral rises above the river, and on Mont Pipet lies the Roman theater, one of the largest in Roman Gaul. On Saturdays the big market fills the streets of the center.
Across the river lies Saint-Romain-en-Gal, where an entire Roman quarter with its mosaics has been excavated, complete with a museum.
Downstream the vineyards of the northern Rhône begin: the Côte-Rôtie at Ampuis with its steep terraces, plus Condrieu and Château-Grillet.
Our recommendation: La Pyramide as your base for all three – the old town on foot, the vineyards as a day trip and Lyon to the north for an afternoon. And if you are heading further south, make Vienne the first stop in the Rhône valley.
La Pyramide is a small hotel with four categories, three of them suites.
The largest is a Family Suite of 60 square meters. A second Family Suite measures 45 square meters, as does the Suite with a king-size bed. The entry level is the Deluxe Room at 30 square meters.
Because two categories are called Family Suite, give the size when you book, 60 or 45 square meters – then you get exactly the suite you have in mind. For couples, the Suite with the king-size bed is the natural choice; for families, the large Family Suite.
If you need a certain size, tell us: our travel advisors confirm it with the hotel before you book.
A night at La Pyramide costs from 250 €. That includes the suitespot benefits from the first night: breakfast for two, an upgrade on arrival upon availability and a welcome gift.
When it is at its best: in spring the terraces along the Rhône turn green and the Roman sites are a pleasure to explore on foot. From late June to mid-July the Jazz à Vienne festival plays in the Roman theater, under the open sky on the ancient tiers. In September and October the harvest is on in the Côte-Rôtie and the slopes change color. And from November to March the town belongs to itself, the cooking gets heartier and the evening at the restaurant becomes the heart of the day.
And whatever the date: the suitespot benefits apply in January just as in July.
How long to stay: two nights, with one day for Roman Vienne, one for the vineyards and an evening at the restaurant in between. As a stop on the way south, one night works too.
Points and membership: the hotel belongs to Relais & Châteaux and sits outside the points programs of the big chains. So you receive the suitespot benefits without any membership card.
What our travel advisors arrange most often in Vienne is an evening at the restaurant of La Pyramide – and the next day a tasting in the Côte-Rôtie: the wine estates on the steep slopes usually receive visitors by appointment only.

And the food: quenelles, Saint-Marcellin cheese from the Isère and a glass of Condrieu or Côte-Rôtie to go with it.
Breakfast is included daily for two, from the first night. On arrival you also receive an upgrade, upon availability, and a welcome gift is waiting in your room.
All three benefits apply without a minimum stay and without membership in a hotel program – you book, and they are part of your stay.
One: we reviewed the best hotels in Vienne and chose La Pyramide, on Boulevard Fernand Point in the south of town. This is Vienne on the Rhône, south of Lyon – not Vienna, which the French also call Vienne.

Every season has its reason: spring for Roman Vienne on foot, late June to mid-July for Jazz à Vienne in the Roman theater, September and October for the harvest and November to March for a quiet town and hearty cooking.
From the first night. We recommend two nights: one day for the town, one for the vineyards.
