Let us start with the benefit, because here it is practical: parking. Portovenere is a place you can barely drive into; the road ends at the harbour, and in summer every space is taken. This hotel has its own garage, and the parking is in the package – a rare benefit.
Now the list. Twelve categories, five suites among them. The sizes: 20 in the Classic, 25 in the Executive, four times 30 (two Deluxe, the Cloister Terrace Junior Suite and one Suite), 45 in the Suite del Castello and 55 in the Suite dei Poeti. And now the duplication: six categories are called “Ocean View”, two “Sea View” – for the same water, the same gulf, the same bay. The difference lies only in the spelling, not in the outlook. Anyone who wants the water should therefore not hold on to the name.
Because that is exactly what our recommendation hangs on: King Deluxe comes in two categories of 30 square metres each – one with “Ocean”, one with “Sea”. The word “King” describes the bed, not the category.

Where to stay in Portovenere: on Via Garibaldi, 100 metres below the castle
The Grand Hotel Portovenere stands on Via Garibaldi directly at the harbour – 100 metres from the Castello Doria, 300 from the church of San Pietro, one kilometre from the island of Palmaria, six from La Spezia, seven from La Spezia Centrale station and from Lerici, nine from Riomaggiore.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone who wants to see the Cinque Terre without living in them – and for those arriving by car who therefore need a space.
What lies within reach: the Castello Doria above the town, 100 metres uphill; the church of San Pietro on the rock point, 300 metres; the island of Palmaria, a few minutes by boat.
For orientation: La Spezia with the station and the ferries lies six kilometres away, Lerici on the other side of the gulf seven, Riomaggiore as the first of the Cinque Terre nine. The boats leave from the harbour at the door. In town one walks; everything else is boat or train.
