Villa della Pergola AlassioFor this guide we reviewed the best hotels in Alassio and chose one: a luxury hotel in precisely one of those villas – with three categories, of which the largest room is bigger than the suite. What that means for booking is below. Our choice for Alassio is the Villa della Pergola Alassio on Via Privata Montagu, on the slope above the town, five minutes from the station. In our ranking it stands at 4.3 out of 5, and a night starts at 420 euros. The hotel belongs to Relais & Châteaux and is a seasonal hotel opening in spring.
Why we recommend it: Because it is the place where Alassio’s story began: founded in 1875 by the Scots George Henderson Gibb and General William Montagu Scott McMurdo – the first Britons to winter here –, rescued from property speculation in 2006 and restored since: fifteen suites in the villa and a garden of two hectares with 34 varieties of wisteria and over 450 species of agapanthus, the largest collection in Europe. Add the restaurant Nove with one Michelin star for Ligurian cooking. In 2026 the villa marks the twentieth year of its rescue. Our recommended category is called Superior Henry.
This hotel has three categories – and the largest room is bigger than the suite.
The sizes: 38 square metres in the Superior room, 52 in the suite, 60 in a room with no further name.
And the order is not the one the word suite promises: the suite measures 52, the room above it 60. Eight square metres more, without the title. Both look out over the garden to the Gulf of Alassio.
Our recommended category is called Superior Henry: the Superior room that bears a person’s name, as the rooms in this villa are named after those who lived here. It is the Superior at 38 square metres – the entry point.
What that means for the upgrade on arrival: it has exactly two directions here – from 38 to 52 or to 60. And the package includes three benefits: breakfast, upgrade, welcome gift. This villa sells a garden and a star.
Our advice: Decide between the word and the space. Anyone wanting to say suite books the 52; anyone wanting room books the room at 60 – and has the view in both cases. Anyone entering at 38 tells our travel advisors which of the two directions the upgrade should take. And the table at Nove comes with it.
The Villa della Pergola Alassio lies on Via Privata Montagu, on the slope above Alassio – five hundred metres from the station, ten minutes on foot from the beach, seventy kilometres from Genoa airport and a good eighty from Nice.
Grand Hotel Alassio Beach Resort · CentroOur recommendation is therefore for anyone wanting to see the Riviera from above – from a garden, not from the promenade – and for whom a beach is something one walks down to.
What lies within reach: the Budello, the shopping lane parallel to the beach, and the Muretto with tiles from Hemingway to the Quartetto Cetra, ten minutes; the Gallinara, the island off the bay with its monastery, by boat from the harbour; and Laigueglia, the fishing village next door, on foot along the coastal path.
For orientation: Alassio station lies on the Genoa–Ventimiglia coastal line; to Genoa a good hour, to Nice two. The villa is reached from the station on foot uphill or by car; for Alassio itself one needs none.
The Villa della Pergola Alassio offers three categories, one of them a suite.
The rooms: 38 square metres in the Superior – our recommended category, listed in the villa under the name Henry – and 60 in the large room with a view.
The suite: 52 square metres, with a view.
On the view: this hotel’s motif is the Gulf of Alassio above the garden – the suite and the large room look out on it.
What applies equally to every category: breakfast for two, the upgrade on arrival subject to availability and a welcome gift.
A night at the luxury hotel in Alassio starts at 420 euros.
The suitespot benefits apply here from the first night. Included are: breakfast for two, an upgrade on arrival subject to availability and a welcome gift.
When it is open: as a seasonal hotel from spring; the gardens are closed in January, February, November and December. Our travel advisors give the season dates.
When it is loveliest: in April, when the 34 varieties of wisteria flower and the garden is what it was laid out for – and in September, when the sea is warm and Alassio belongs to the locals again.
What belongs to the Riviera: August. Then the beach is a carpet of sunbeds, the Budello a procession, and the villa on the slope the place from which one sees it from above. That is not a warning but the calendar.
When to ask early: for the wisteria flowering in April, when the gardens draw visitors, and for the two categories with a view on any weekend from May to September.
How long to stay: two nights for garden, beach and Nove – three if Genoa or the Gallinara are added.
And whatever the date: you get the suitespot benefits in the quietest week of the year just as you do in the busiest.
The Riviera di Ponente is the western half of Liguria, from Genoa to the French border – less famous than the eastern side with Portofino, but with the beaches Liguria otherwise lacks. Alassio has the longest, and it has the gardens the English laid out when they made the town their winter quarters in the 19th century.
Personal luxury travel adviceOur travel advisors personally accompany your booking – 365 days a year, from the first offer to late check-out. Reach the suitespot VIP service via email or WhatsApp.Phone: +49 30 81452346 · hotel@suitespot.comThree things belong to it. First the gardens of the villa itself: two hectares above the town, with guided tours for visitors not staying at the hotel – and the guests’ privilege of having them to themselves in the morning. Second the Gallinara: the tortoise-shaped island off the bay, a nature reserve, with the monastery where Saint Martin is said to have lived. Third Albenga, the Roman town five kilometres on, with its 5th-century baptistery and its medieval towers.
The package at this hotel is breakfast, upgrade and gift.
What our travel advisors arrange most often: the table at Nove, because the star is the reason for the trip, the garden tour in the morning, and the choice between 52 and 60 – for the reason stated above.
