This hotel’s recommended category exists twice – and the hotel is not in Zernez.
First the place, because it decides the journey: the hotel stands in Brail, a hamlet of Zernez seven and a half kilometres down the valley, with its own stop on the Rhaetian Railway. Anyone travelling to Zernez and getting off there still has ten minutes ahead.
Then the ladder: six categories, all with an area – and the entry point is a suite of 35 square metres. Above it 45, 60, 65 in the Garden Suite and 85 in the Spa Suite. Six categories make for a short list, and that means: every step is a decision.
Our recommended category is called Engadine Mountain View House. It stands twice in the list: at 45 and at 60 square metres – and only these two categories expressly promise the mountain view. Anyone booking “the Engadine House” has the mountain for certain, but not yet the size.
And the package: breakfast, upgrade on arrival, welcome gift. That is slim, and it is honest: this hotel sells a star and a valley.
Our advice: Book the Engadine House at 60 – by number – and the table at Vivanda at the same time. The 45 is the same category in small; the upgrade on arrival is one rung on a ladder of six and can lead from 45 to 60 – but only if the 60 is free. And tell our travel advisors: Brail, not Zernez.
Where to stay in Zernez: in Brail, at the entrance to the National Park
The In Lain Hotel Cadonau Brail stands in Brail, on the Inn, seven and a half kilometres down the valley from Zernez – at the entrance to the Swiss National Park, with St. Moritz 24 kilometres up the valley and Scuol 27 kilometres down it.
Our recommendation is therefore for anyone taking the Engadine as a valley rather than a ski resort: walkers in the National Park, cyclists along the Inn, guests who sit at Vivanda in the evening and have nothing planned in the morning.
What lies within reach: the National Park with the visitor centre in Zernez and the trails from the Ofen Pass, ten minutes; Guarda, the village with the finest sgraffito façades in the valley, a quarter of an hour down the valley; and Scuol with its mineral baths and drinking springs, half an hour.
For orientation: the Rhaetian Railway stops in Brail; from Zurich it is three and a half hours via Landquart and the Vereina tunnel. The Ofen Pass leads to South Tyrol, the Flüela Pass to Davos. A car is useful but not necessary: the train runs hourly, and the National Park begins at the door.
